The Yokohama Maigazawas opened on December 25, 1952. It was closed in 1991 to be twinned. It reopened on December 21, 1991 as the twin-screen Cinema Jack & Betty. The Jack screen had 114-seats and the Betty screen had 138-seats. This quirky cinema is famed for their specialty popcorn and eccentric retro decorations. They show a wide range of movies from new queer cinema to Korean historical dramas, though almost none with English subtitles. Lots of showings of new independent Japanese movies and documentaries. Their chirashi section is huge, and contains slates from across the Tokyo greater metropolitan area as well as Kamakura, Kawasaki, and more. Located near Isezaki-cho, Yokohama City. Highly recommend perusing the nearby shops before or after!

Built on the site of an airfield that was used by the United States Military after World War II, the Yokohama Meigaza launched on Christmas Day 1952 as a Japanese film house. The Yokohama Meigaza closed in 1991 for major renovation, which led the original auditorium to be split into two. On December 21, 1991, the Yokohama Meigaza reopened as the Cinema Jack & Betty, a 252-seat twin by Chuo Kogyo screening foreign films on the 114-seat Jack screen and Japanese films on the 138-seat Betty screen, who also operated the next-door Yokohama Nichigeki.
The Cinema Jack & Betty was also located across the street from another movie theater that had a history, called the Yokohama Nichigeki, which will have its own Cinema Treasures page.
