Built on the site of an airfield that was used by the United States Military after World War II, the Yokohama Meigaza launched on Christmas Day 1952 as a Japanese film house. The Yokohama Meigaza closed in 1991 for major renovation, which led the original auditorium to be split into two. On December 21, 1991, the Yokohama Meigaza reopened as the Cinema Jack & Betty, a 252-seat twin by Chuo Kogyo screening foreign films on the 114-seat Jack screen and Japanese films on the 138-seat Betty screen, who also operated the next-door Yokohama Nichigeki.

The Cinema Jack & Betty was also located across the street from another movie theater that had a history, called the Yokohama Nichigeki, which will have its own Cinema Treasures page.
