Strand Theatre

This theatre was located in an old wooden opera house built sometime between 1898 and 1904. It was a basic two story structure, clad in sheet metal, and originally had a lodge hall on the second floor. The opera house was still active in 1911, but ceased operation at some point afterward. It doesn’t seem to have shown movies, as Bridgewater does not appear in the 1914-15 AMPD.

The 1923 map shows the building in use as a public hall, but by 1926, it was showing movies as the Strand Theatre. The 1926 Film Daily Yearbook does list an Opera House, but with no capacity, and I believe that to be an error. Initially listed with 500 seats, by 1931 the capacity had been reduced. The theater is listed as closed in 1938, and by 1939 has been replaced by the Bridgewater Theatre (later Nancy Theatre) which has its own page on Cinema Treasures.

The building was demolished long ago, and this corner is a vacant lot.

I’ve added a map view. The address is a wild guess based on the one address I could find on that block.
