The Hakodate International Theater opened its doors at a two-story reinforced concrete building in 1948, and was renamed the Hakodate Central Theater in 1951. Its Central name lasted throughout the rest of its history. Shochiku took over the theater in 1964, and was renamed the Hakodate Shochiku Central Theater.
On March 13, 1968, most of the auditorium was destroyed by a fire, which also caused severe damage to nearly a quarter of the building, with most of the damage coming from the auditorium including its seating. Authorities later confirmed that the fire started from the lighting’s heating that also destroyed the theater’s curtains. It was rebuilt and reopened later on.
The Hakodate Shochiku Central Theater closed for the final time in 1987.
