One of the African American movie houses owned by Frederick King “F.K.” Watkins. Watkins was the most prominent individual operator of silent theatres for African American patrons in North Carolina with venues in Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Wilson, High Point, Durham, Goldsboro, Apex, Reidsville, and Elizabeth City.

The Dixie Theatre was the go-to silent era venue in the neighborhood but it did not last into the 1930’s. When the Eagle Theatre opened a block away, it was the theatre which was converted to a sound theatre for the Washington Street clientele after its rebranding as the Rex Theatre.

The Dixie Theatre building has since been demolished.
