Pickett Theater

At the height of World War II Camp Pickett was created and named after a Confederate General. A movie theater was included.

After the war was over the camp was put on standby until reactivation in 1948. In 1974 the “Camp” was upgraded to “Fort”. It was the home of the Virginia National Guard.

From August 2021 - September 2022 the theater served as a reception center for some 10,000 refugees during Operation Allies Welcome.

In 2023 it was renamed Fort Barfoot by President Trump under his policy of removing names of Confederate Generals. It honored a native American General.

After a period of revitalization and redesign as a theater/auditorium, which included seating with fold up desks and the installation of state of the art audio and visual technology (including three projectors), the theater reopened in May 2024 with a “Star Wars” themed event.

The name Pickett was subsequently restored but, technically, honoring another individual.

Admission for movies is free but there is a charge for concessions. Interestingly, the latter were not originally available within the building. Another post reopening project was the upgrading of the “latrines”, aka bathrooms.
