The Gem Theatre operated as early as Spring 1909 and closed on September 22, 1923 with Agnes Ayres in “Racing Hearts” and Al St. John in “The Author” when the nearby Coliseum Theatre opened three days later.

There is a very interesting piece on the Gem in The Oregon Theatre Project. A few facts readily transferred here: 28 1st Street; opened April 15, 1909; initially only for movies but after a stage built added live entertainment; a center for community activities; outgrew it’s space resulting in the Coliseum being built.

Some great images of ads also, but none, however, of the theatre.
