Oneida Theatre

Carl Lingwall opened this venture in December of 1913. In 1927, M. A. Sterrit sold the 303-seat Park Theatre to C. E. White. It appears to have scuffled and closed during the Depression likely unable to convert to sound.

The venue was relit as the Oneida Theatre. It closed once again in the early 1950s likely due to television. But the venue mounted a final comeback in 1953 as a 251-seater under its new operator. It opened June 29th with “The Return of the Texan.” The Oneida Theatre was last listed on September 1, 1953 with “The Turning Point.” As of 1953, there weren’t that many towns with a population of 550 still operating a movie theater - so this is a tip of the hat and a likely closure date for the Oneida Theatre.

The building was in very poor condition, with a bricked-up front, but has recently been remodeled into housing.

This theater was mentioned in the “Illinois Theatre Changes” column of Moving Picture World for October 21, 1916: “Oneida, Ill. The Park Theater opened September 27 with the ‘Eternal City.; The music is furnished by a five piece orchestra.” The house might have been a seasonal operation in its early years, or this might have been when it began operating as a movie house.

The April 22, 1916 issue of MPW mentioned “Paul Ericson’s Cozy theater” at Oneida. I don’t know if this was a second house or only an aka for the Park.
