Dawson during the 1930’s hosted three theatres, the Lee Theatre, the Joy Theatre and the Ritz Theatre, later called the Martin Theatre. The city was alleged to have had celebrities such as Clark Gable in attendance for various screening as well. As of 2026, none exist within the city limits. The Lee Theatre is believed to have lasted the longest, closing it’s doors during the 1970’s.

Both the 1920 and 1930 Sanborn maps of Dawson show moving pictures being shown in a building at 121 E. Lee Street. No name for the theater is given in 1930, but in 1920 it was called the Palace Theatre. This location is the only movie house shown on either map, but the 1920 map does show an upstairs opera house labeled “Formerly Fargason Opera House” at 121-123 N. Main Street.
The 1914-1915 AMPD lists two movie houses at Dawson, neither at the Lee Street address. The Amuse-U Theatre is listed on Main Street and the Palace Theatre is listed at 204 N. Main Street, a building which in 1930 housed an auto repair business.
The March 31, 1917 issue of The Dramatic Mirror ran a notice about the opening of what was probably this house, slated for about May 1. The 600-seat theater presenting movies and stage productions would be managed by J. P. Greer, already operating the Palace Theatre. The name of the new theater had not been chosen, but that 1920 Sanborn suggests that the name Palace was simply moved from the Main Street house to this new location.
