Palace Theatre

The Cinema 219 at the Somerset Mall opened its doors on October 16, 1971 with Toralv Maurstad in “Song of Norway” along with the children’s matinee “The Princess and the Magic Frog” before showing. It was a single-screener at first until June 30, 1987, when the original Cinema 219 closed with “Creep Show II” because of a new theater opening elsewhere in the mall.

The Somerset 6 Theaters opened its doors on July 1, 1987. The first two screens opened first with “Harry and the Hendersons” and “Adventures in Babysitting”, with the other four auditoriums opening a few weeks later. Two months later in September 1987, the Somerset 6 Theaters was renamed the Palace Theatre.

The Palace Theatre closed for the final time on April 6, 2006, because of landlord problems alongside an overdue rent. Last owner Sorrell Naft of Pittsburgh didn’t want to notify locals about the closure, which he instead displayed “closed for renovations” on the marquee.
