The Lake Park Drive-In Theatre launched June 6, 1953 with “Horizons West” and “No Room for the Groom” along with a cartoon. It was marketed additionally with the name of the L.P. Drive-In in the 1950s. The Lake Park closed on September 7, 1981 with “The Prowler” and “The Evil” on Screen One and “Student Bodies” and “Eye for an Eye” On Screen Two.

The Lake Park was still opened until 81 at least. The last movie I saw there was Outland and it came out in 81. It stood for a couple more years before it was demolished. The State’s last year of operation was 91. These were two of my favorite drive ins growing up. Visited them both dozens of times at least.

Was this the drive in that had big fireworks displays in the mid-late 1960s for the 4th of July?

Both are long closed. I haven’t been by the location of the State D.I. in some time. The last time I saw it it was still standing, but in sad shape. Not sure about the Lake Park. The only drive ins left in Kansas City are the I-70 (four screen), Twin (two screen) and the Boulevard (single screen).
