Vogue Theatre

The Vogue Theatre situated in downtown Sydney, Nova Scotia, opened its doors in 1939 and showed films for 60 years. Heralded as the ‘newest type of theatre’ with ‘modernity as its keynote’, the Vogue was decorated in what is now termed the Art Deco style. The architect was Herbert G. Duerr of Toronto, Canada.

The Vogue Theatre closed in 1998. It sat on an unusually large downtown lot overlooking Sydney Harbor until it was demolished in April 2008.

What a waste! If only I had the money to purchase this beautiful building and turn it back into a star! Please someone, spend your money and make this piece of history something to talk about again. Couldn’t you picture yourself getting dressed up and going downtown on a Saturday night for a play, musical or motion picure at the Vogue? Wouldn’t it be great to have some history of Cape Breton displayed inside for everyone to see as well? I see amazing possibilities why can’t you?

I agree, this is a beautiful theatre and it should be restored, I toured the interior of the building today, its needs allot of cosmetic work however it is structurally sound. Last I heard (August 22, 2007)it was to be demolished so if there is anyone out there that has about $300,000 they would like to donate I would love to see this building saved. The current asking price is $125K however the building needs a new roof at about $100K and the interior needs about $75 to $100K to repair the damage from being vacant for over 7 years. Please email me at .ca if you can donate money or have a plan to save this structure from the wrecking ball.

The Vogue Theatre was torn down on Friday April 4, 2008 despite a recent poll stating that 68% of participants wanted to see this beautiful art deco theatre restored. The lot where the Vogue once stood will soon become an office complex.

This theatre was built in 1939 by the late D.P. MacDonald and operated jointly by Mr. MacDonald and Famous Players Canadian Corp as one of their partnerships!
