This opened on April 14th, 1995. Grand opening ad in the photo section.
Too bad there are no photos.
I just read on another site that this place I once went to is no more. Competition and business on the island is fierce and I guess w/ the cost of going to one now vs. waiting till it hits DVD & the innovation of Blu-Rays not even extreme lower priced tickets which this location lastly resorted to eventually sank. As I was thee first to comment I am gonna leave my mark saying that yes I enjoyed goin to this theatre when it was the hot spot to head to then while I was on the islands.
This theater chain closed down with their last showing on August 2, 2009. Despite “great” business, it was said that their least was up and decided not to renew.
Here’s a nice fact:
With the “competition” building up with Regal Dole Cannery and Consolidated Ward, they switched from first-run movies to Art House. If I remembered correctly, they had a 5 year-something contract to do so. With attendance on the decline, they switched from Art House to second run movies.
This theater chain was bought out by Hollywood Theaters.
I was part of the first crew that worked at this theatre (hired as a projectionist) and I still have some fond memories of it. It was the arrival of the Wallace Restaurant Row 9 Theatres and later arrival of the Signature chain of theaters (since bought out by the Regal chain) that forced Consolodated Theaters to wake the F*ck up to the living nightmare that their no-care monopolizing was responsible for all their patrons to begin flocking to the new guys in Town! Because Wallace (and later Signature) came to Honolulu offering “fresh popped” in the lobby popcorn and “matinee” ticket prices, Consolodated sh!t themselves and soon began doing likewise, along with a busload of renovation work on their properties. “Competition” had proved yet again to be one of mankind’s greatest inventions!
I used to go to this place a lot. Catch whatever movie that was playin and head over to nearby Aloha Tower Marketplace ot trek down to Ala Moana Center. BTW, when are they gonna put one directly there? I may have been out of touch w/ the latest happenings since Ihave departed 1998.
