December 23rd, 1966 grand opening ad with picture in the photo section.
Western Woods Cinema’s advertising marquee was at ground level. With such a low level changing upcoming and current film titles was easy on cinema personel, however this also worked for local young artists who took full advantage. Some of the unofficial titles were ,shall we say,“earthy!”
The Western Woods Cinema was a single screen theater with 3 sections of seets. It had 2 main isles and 2 side isles. It contained 1202 seats that were had metal frame which was pained white, and had a cushined seat with a red nalgihide covering on it.
There was a concession stand that was located to the right as you walked into the lobby, after you purchased your ticket from the 2 person ticket booth located between the theaters 2 double doored front doors.
Clarence B. Ridge was the 1st person to Manage the theater for General Cinema Corporation.
The Cinema would have first run movies and would run advertising with the now closed Hollywood, and Mariemont Cinemas that were owned at the time by Midstate Theater Co.
It was gutted in the late 70s and was used to relocate the Thriftway Food and Drug store from its location behind the Cinema in the same Shopping Center. Thriftway would not stand the test of time and would eventually be converted to what it is today, a Home Depot.
I have many fond memories of the Cinema, I worked there as an usher, was promoted to a doorman and later as Assistent Manager. The one thing I still have today to remind me of the Cinema is my wife Sandy, whom I met 36 years ago, and yes I did let her in free after we met the first time.
This Cinema was located at 6252 Glenway Ave. in Cincinnati, Ohio. There was also a Westwood Theater, which was located on Harrison Ave, also on the Westside of Cincinnati, which changed its name to Westwood Cinema, which was converted to a twin screen cinema
I believe the Western Woods Cinema had a different name, either when it first opened or before it closed, but I can’t remember what it was. Any help out there, or am I just imagining this?
