The Spotlight Cinemas opened on April 26, 1996 at the University Mall, as a bargain house, the first in the Bangor area. This six-screen house now screens first-run films, and was refurbished in 2004, with stadium seating, Dolby Digital and DTS-Digital sound. It was closed for a while and was taken over by new independent operators and was renamed Black Bear Cinemas on August 15, 2023.

Listings in Bangor Daily News from 1979 show that Cinema Centers Corp operated a single-screen Orono Cinema on Stillwater Ave, at the University Shopping Center. Does the current 6-plex contain the original single?
This theatre info is extremely outdated. The Spotlight Cinemas is wrong. This theatre is called Black Bear Cibemas. Black Bear Cinemas in Orono, Maine, officially held its grand opening under its new name and ownership on August 15, 2023. Lifelong friends Charles Moody and Zach Hussey purchased the previously closed theater (formerly known as Spotlight Cinemas) and reopened it with a charity event benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
