Cinema Centre 8 - Shawnee, OK

Originally built in 1980 as a twin indoor with a common lobby also serving the Starlite Drive-In in Shawnee, Oklahoma, the Cinema Centre has always been a spacious, comfortable modern theatre. Built by Jones Theatres, Inc. in partnership with Video Independent Theatres, the architect was Larry Blackledge and Associates of Oklahoma City.

When Carmike Cinemas purchased Video’s circuit the theatre has continued as a joint venture of Jones Theatres and Carmike. In 1988, the Starlite Drive-In closed and six additional auditoriums were added to the Cinema Centre.

Most recently all eight auditoriums were retro-fitted to stadium seating and completely redecorated and re-seated in December 2004. Wide aisles, wide seats, all easily accessible, make the Cinema Centre 8 one of the area’s most desirable venues for moviegoing. The theatre features stereo sound in all auditoriums, infra-red headphones for the hearing impaired, and online advance ticketing through fandango.com. Jones Cinemas announced that new seating would be installed in Spring 2023.

This was the first theater that I attended when I moved to Shawnee in ‘81. I was very impressed by the size of the two auditoriums and the spaciousness of the seating. Most of all, I was absolutely thrilled there was a modern dolby house in this small town. The first Indiana Jones movie was an absolute experience there. Big screen, Dolby sound…wow. I’m glad to see it is still operating. They didn’t downsize the two original auditoriums hopefully.
