Marcus Loew was oerating the Grand as early as 1918, as reported in the May 18 issue of The Moving Picture World:

“ATLANTA, GA. — Marcus Loew, of New York, will expend $40,000 for improvements to Grand theater instead of erecting new structure as previously reported. Plans include remodeling gallery, erecting mezzanine floor, stage and marquee; installing $15,000 pipe organ, typhoon fan system, electric equipment, scenery, and hangings. E. A. Schiller is local manager.”

We were taken to the site of this cinema on a tour of the U.S.A. in 1991. Gone With The Wind was always a favourite of mine.

It was at this venue 50 years ago today that “Gone With The Wind” had its (infamous) 70mm re-release re-premiere.

I noticed that Willlburg145 on 11-9-13 mentioned how convenient it was that a fire broke out just as efforts were being made to save the Grand. Same thing happened in Boston in 1961 when a move started to save the Old Howard Theatre which was in the way of an office development. A fire, of “undetermined origin” broke out one day which gutted the building, leading to its demolition. Just a coincidence, of course. Nothing supicious, just one of those things, etc. Yeah, right,

I have had a set of 4 seats from the Loew’s grand for many years. I’ve never gotten them appraised. Anybody have any idea of the worth or know where the majority of them ended up. I see where they were sold to a church, but don’t know which one.

How convenient that a fire broke out the same time as they were trying to save it. What occupies this site now?

I have just obtained a picture of Rhett and Scarlett and waxed in the middle of the picture is a ticket to the show from 1939. Can anyone help me with this. I don’t know if it’s worth anything or not. There is a picture of it as my avatar. Thanks for your help.

It is very sad that this theatre was not saved; the 1978 fire conveniently ended the battle for preservation. I attended several times in 1964 and 65, the words that come to mind are “faded splendor.” The carpets and usher’s uniforms were somewhat threadbare, but there was a nice display of GWTW memorabilia on the mazzanine level. Some of the staff could be a little short with patrons. I remember getting caught in a downpour, and being told off for dripping a little water just inside the front door. Black and white movies played well here; I saw “Guns at Batasi”, “Lady in a Cage”, “The Visit”, and several others. “The Yellow Rolls Royce” played only one week and advanced the $1.50 ticket numbers by less than 1000.
