1995-02-03 … IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS (4) (DTS)

Who would’ve ever guessed then that John Carpenter would perform live music in the same venue and even perform that very score?

The original seat count of the Loew’s Astor, with the Griggs pushback seats, was 1528. After the remodeling around the end of the 20th century (I forget exactly when that happened) with the new Irwin rocking chair seats installed the count was 1440. The lease didn’t exactly prohibit dividing the auditorium, but required permission of the building owner for any alterations other than replacement of carpet, draperies, wall covering and counters/cabinetry of the concession stands. Three times times over the years Loew’s sought permission to divide the auditorium into 2, 3 and 4 cinemas, but the building owner shot them down each time. It’s one of the reasons it didn’t get its first (and only, by Loew’s) remodeling until it was about 25 years old, compared to 84th St. which had been remodeled twice by the time it was 12 years old.

A similar lease was held by RKO & Cineplex on the National across the street. When Cineplex remodeled in the late 80s they turned the two cinemas into three. When they were getting ready to re-open the landlord came around to look at the place. Apparently Cpx had not received permission to further divide the theatre, and the landlord ordered them to restore it back to two theatres, thereby delaying the re-opening by a few weeks.

Does anybody recall that Loews announced plans to triplex the Astor Plaza in the wake of the closing of the original Loews State in early 1987? I seem to remember that Loews' lease prohibited multiplexing the theatre, thankfully.

The NYTimes obituary states there were 1440 seats in this house…

The very first comment on this thread mentions there were 1500+ seats, not exactly an exact count…

Wow, that list is a master list of every major film of the first 25 years of my life and then some.

Question, though. Does anyone have the capacity of this place when it was a movie theatre? The 2100 figure is for the current concert venue for concerts with general admission, but the figure is 1166 for reserved seating. (They put out a lot of folding chairs. 568 according to their seating chart.) so I wonder what the capacity was when it was all fixed seats.

That is an amazing list. I am astounded at how many movies I remember seeing at this house. Damn, what a loss…

Thank you Coate for all that hard work compiling it all. It’s appreciated.

I’m re-posting the list of films that played here since the website redesign a few years ago has caused the original formatting to go haywire, not to mention the original list is now buried among several pages of comments. So here’s a fresh version with improved layout and formatting.

With a name like Playstation Theater, what’s next, Xbox Theater or Nintendo theater? Not too far from Playstation theater there are Microsoft stores as well as Nintendo NYC (f/k/a Nintendo World at Rockefeller Center). Yankee Stadium also has Playstation kiosks in the museum not to mention the Sony advertising sign at the field. When it ran as a movie house, around the time I was born, The Dark Crystal had its world premiere there, during which Jim Henson and company brought puppets from the film to the premiere. That movie soon became a cult classic and a worldwide hit.

My favorite NYC movie theatre. I enjoyed so many classic movies at this theatre. STAR WARS (the first time I was there), ANIMAL HOUSE, SUPERMAN, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, ALTERED STATES, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, RETURN OF THE JEDI, INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM, 2010, WITNESS, YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES, PLATOON, PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES, SCROOGED, INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, FOREST GUMP, KINGPIN, TITANIC, THE EXORCIST 2000 VERSION, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, APOCALYPSE NOW REDUX, THE 2001 re-release of 2001, and the three LORD OF THE RINGS movies. Even saw a few duds like LICENCE TO KILL, ANOTHER 48 HOURS, COOL WORLD, BATMAN AND ROBIN, WILD WILD WEST and that last MATRIX movie. The last movie I saw here was THE RETURN OF THE KING. I really miss trekking into NYC to see a movie at Loews Astor Plaza.

I take that back. Snapple is a far worse name.

There is a Snapple Theater down the block

I totally agree with you on the name RobertR. I can’t think of a more stupid name that reeks of greedy corporate synergy.

This name just sounds so moronic to me, just my opinion

The Selwyn Theatre was restored and renovated by the Roundabout Theatre company and re-opened on July 27, 2000 with a production of “The Man Who Came To Dinner” starring Nathan Lane. It was renamed for its generous benefactor, American Airlines.

Thanks Joe Vogel. The American Airlines Theater aka Selwyn has kept its name since becoming a legit theater.

It’s money, Mikeoaklandpark, and the value of publicity. AEG in particular doesn’t like to leave so much as a penny on the table. They cash in on selling naming rights to companies that know every event advertisement, every review, every social media post that mentions the venue with their name on it is an advertisement for them and their products. Companies will bid each other up, and the one willing to pay the most gets its name on the venue.

Old time showmen like Marcus Lowe and William Fox built famous brands out of their own names, but modern promoters have realized they can make even more money by charging other companies for five-year piggyback rides. I believe five years is the most common term of a naming rights contract, so the names are apt to change that often unless the current contact holder is willing to pay for another five years, usually at a higher price. If some other company is willing to pay more, then it’s goodbye Best Buy Theatre and hello PlayStation Theatre.

I hate the new name. Why has this theater gone through so many name changes?

I use HTML because I’m accustomed to it, but Cinema Treasures also supports Markdown code, which is much simpler. To italicize with Markdown simply put an asterisk * at the beginning of the first word you want italicized and another asterisk at the end of the last word you want italicized (or an asterisk at the beginning and end of a single word if that’s the only one you want in italics.) You can also use underscores _ the same way. Doubling either asterisks ** or underscores gives you bold type instead of italics. You can also use Markdown to make text hyperlinks, as described in this official post.

Jo, how do you get italics into your comment?

When it was Best Buy Theatre it was owned and/or operated by AEG Worldwide, one of the companies controlled by secretive billionaire Philip Anschutz. They haven’t updated their web site with the new name, so I don’t know if they still own it, or if they are just a bit slovenly about keeping their web site up to date.

Does the name “PlayStation Theater” (there’s no space between the words) sound to anyone else like it would be a 1970s storefront porn house? To be sure, if selling naming rights helps historic theaters to survive then I’m all for it, but oy, what a name this is.
