21/4/1950 was a soft opeing. The offical grand opening was on 27/5/1950 with “Streets of Laredo” and “Free for all”.

A more accurate address for this theater is 860 Lake St, Angola, NY 14006. This points to the entrance road. Ramps, screen foundation and concession foundation are still visible.

Please update.

Was there a building under the screen?

Opened on 21/4/1950 with “Oh you beautiful doll”. Mural of comedy and tragedy masks on the back of a tilted screen.

Again, the ugly face of politics has dominated over classic Americana and nostalgia. This is why I am as anti-political as they come. Despite being born in 1969, I live for the past as opposed to today’s ever-so-screwed up society, especially in terms of television, music, and of course, drive-in theaters.

I’ll be hoping and praying that the relocation to Brant goes through.

Sorry to say it is true, We are still fighting to save the screen tower for relocation, sadly our town officials do not care, The Supervisor from the Town of Brant has been working with us for a backup plan to relocate it to Brant, however none of us expected demolition now. Afterall, the sale of the property to walmart may Never even happen, and now the owner may end up with an empty lot, while WE were intrested in purchasing it AS-IS if the walmart sale failed…

The loser here?

The Town of Evans/Angola and the children who have just been robbed of one more bit of our heritage and Family activities…

This is a SAD day… We are watching America slip away a little bit here and a little bit there while everyone looks the other way. :(

We drove past the Grandview this past weekend while driving down route 5 looking for places to photograph for our photography website. A search for the Grandview online lead me to Tony’s site. They are still fighting for this theater. The photographs my husband and I took can be found in our “the forgotten” gallery, along with some from the Van Buren down the road in Dunkirk, the motel across the street from the Grandview and more here: View link .

Let WalMart open its store in a vacant land. We should keep the Grandview and use it to attract visitors.
One idea I was thinking is to use it in the summer to hold International Film Festival, as Canada has been successful in doing that and recently they become very arrogant by refusing top artists from other countries to come to compete.

At the present time Wal-Mart wants to put a store on the site of the Grandview.

YES!

In 1952 it was a BELLS IGA store…

I will be posting pics when the grandview was being built to the www.grandviewdrivein.com site sometime this week!

You can see the store, and the “Block Hotel” the VFW and not much else, not even tree’s!

well, 1 tree but it died a few years ago Guess it was pretty old!

The last time I was by the Grandview I again didn’t have time to stop, but the next time I will hit the brake! I did notice the Jubilee grocery store in front of the drive-in and wondered if that building was there years ago? Also, the Grandview is listed as ‘open’, but wondered if that is truly the case now? And did anyone see last Sunday’s CBS morning show as they featured drive-in theatres of Texas. It was great to see one family in Texas who have opened a drive-in and the cars and people are coming with their families to relive old memories and to make new memories.

ChrisB: Your photos of the Grandview are really great, too. Thanks and I wish the Friends of the Grandview much success in their efforts to restore this great piece of Americana along the shores of Lake Erie on scenic Route 5 in western NYS.

before and afters would be nice but I’ll take whatever I can get!

Thanks!

The New Angola Theatre in Angola NY is very nice and was once owned by Richard Geitner whose family built and owned the former Geitner Theatre in nearby Silver Creek NY.

Tony: Good luck with your website and devotion to help save the Grandview Drive In in Angola NY. It’s a nice little town in western NYS.

The property owners (same people who run the Super Freeze) have refused to do ANY repairs on the property so far, including replacing the Marquee Building that blew down in a storm like 3 YEARS ago! and so far this year, they have not even repaired a huge hole in the screen that is preventing the operator from even opening this year!

I am setting up a website devoted to help save the Grandview at my own expense, www.grandviewdrivein.com should be online in the next week or so!

Tony.
