Cinedome 70

MadmNanner, I have been working on a business plan and proposal to convert the Cinedome 70 into a Dinner Theater, I have the Business plan all but done and have the number of the owner, as soon as I have it done, I will be putting the proposal together and presenting it to the owner if they are willing. I have put in about 3 years of research into it, and was actually going to use another location in Davis County, but have gone back to the idea of using the Cinedome. I have run a number of successful start up companies, and have some investors already lined up that will be willing to invest, we need more, but I feel that if the owner is open to the idea, that we have a very good chance of being successful. With the latest (and most likely last) Star Wars movie set for release next week I couldn’t help but think of the first time I saw the original Star Wars movies. I saw all of them at the Cinedome and it will be forever linked to the Star Wars Saga for me.
Also seeing how it’s the 25th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back, did you know the movie was officially released on May 21 in 126 exclusive, limited market 70mm six-track stereophonic sound engagements. And can you guess where one of those 126 limited 70mm editions played? It was at the Cinedome! The 70mm prints differed from the 35mm version in that some editing differences, additional shots, alternate takes, and extra dialogue can be detected through a comparison of the two versions. The majority of the public and media who saw the movie in its first month of release saw the “less complete” 35mm version. The Cinedome was just the coolest theater ever!

Does anyone know who owns/manages the theater? Might be interested in buying.

David Moesinger managed the theater for several years, until 1998 or 1999. He knew he had a commodity on his hands, as far as the Cinedome being one of the best cinematic venues in the West, so he began showing midnight movies during the summer, films he felt could fully take advantage of the Cinedome’s enormous screens, and was met by a strong core of fan enthusiasm, but not a great deal of financial success. The theater was in disrepair when Moesinger became manager, and he was constantly lobbying for upgrades, particularly in regards to the sound system and the carpeting, but was met with general apathy. Moesinger loved the theater and movies and always seemed disappointed that he was unable to help the theater reach its full potential.

I’m certainly willing to start talking about reopening that place. I’ve got a lot of great ideas too, and it’s a shame that it’s just sitting there (except around christmas time when they use the parking lot to sell xmas trees). I remember seeing star wars there, and jurassic park, and so many great movies.
My husband thinks that it should be a strip club (cause of the way it’s shaped).
I don’t know how many investors would be needed, I certainly know that on my credit alone there’s no way I could get a business loan for that place.

We have a small theater and may be interested in purchasing some theater seats if they sell this one.

It hasn’t been sold, nor has it been leased to another company. Anyone have any recent news on the old cinedome building?

Does anyone know the reason for Cinedomes #. If you do a search of just Cinedome there are a bunch of numbered cinedomes throughout the country. I realize the obvious answer is just that they had to keep them separate, but is there a different reason?

The theater was still vacant when I drove past it on June 30th, but it will be some time before I drive past there again. (I live about 30 minutes south of it). There was a semi parked in front of it for some reason. I don’t think the theater was ever for sale, just for lease, but if it’s been vacant since February then the owners might be willing to sell.

This really is a great theater, but it was sadly neglected during nearly 20 years of management by Cineplex Odeon/Plitt. I went there last for X-Men and the picture was dim and the sound, although digital, was very underwhelming. I’m sure the sound system had the barest upgrade possible to get DTS into the theater.

I think the theater has about the most perfect layout in the auditorium. They have huge screens, 50 to 70 feet wide, with a deep curve. The Villa in Salt Lake is the only other theater in Utah with a deeply-curved screen. The projection booth is not so high that there is any really obvious distortion on the screen. It really deserves to be a first-run theater again, and not a private club.
