Tribune-12/7/40:Plan Open-Air Drive-In In Morton Grove
The leasing of a 30 acre tract in Morton Grove yesterday by the Illinois Drive-In Theaters company, Inc. started work towards the third open air movie theater for the Chicago area. The site is on the west side of Waukegan road, a quarter of a mile north of Beckwith Road.
A preliminary payment of $3,000 was made on the $18,750 rent total for the 10 year term. The lessee has an option to buy prior to Nov. 1, 1945 for $30,000. After that date the price will be $40,000,
according to the lease filed for record yesterday.

Today, January 26, 2006, they were scheduled to open the time capsule at the theatre according to the newspaper. Demolition of the theatre to follow soon. What a pity.

The theatre was designed by the firm of Loebl, Schlossman, Bennett and Dart (they also did River Oaks Shopping Center which opened in 1966) and the movie shown at the charity premiere was “Romeo and Juliet,” a benefit for the Calumet City Council of the Mentally Retarded that my parents attended. River Oaks 2 opened with a benefit showing of “Fiddler on the Roof” which I attended with my parents.
