Any Classic retrospective at the Ziegfeld should be titles of a large widescreen nature…70MM if you can get them and make it truly special..The Alamo…(1960)…Around Word/80 Days…I definitely agree with the 70’s disaster festival….titles that are not often seen….so no Casablanca, GWTW, Kane etc…..big screen stuff

A NICE thater that’s wasted…why don’t they have classic movie retrospectives…I bet they’d draw them in like flies…especially with that theater..

You know….all this talk about “Dreamgirls” and how it was woth $25. Well, I saw it yesterday at a morning show for $5. While it was a good movie (although not a memorable one) I wouldn’t have been happy paying $25 for it even if it did have a curtain at the opening….any teasers about what Ziegfeld is showing at the next Hollywood Classics?

Saw “Shane” yesterday. What a great film which gets me thinking…we have no good movie heroes today. It’s easy to see how a young boy can be influenced by Shane.

Now, yet another nitpick….once again, the curtain closed early on the ending, thus, causing distraction and and blocking the music tag at the very end where it says “A Paramount Picture”. This is the 3rd time this season where I felt a little ripped off at the end (Kane, Becket and this) where eitherthe curtain, lights or both marred the final impact of a great film. That final tag on “Shane” was always a great final moment but the curtain seems to be closing too early on these films. Why not wait until the final frame? Realizing it wasn’t the best print (I;m not complaining as I’m grateful to the Lafayette for getting thse great films) For the record: The Lafayette is THE BEST theater around. I didn’t even renew my Film Forum membership but I leave the theater a little disapointed as a final moment is gone because of an early curtain (BTW…people move when the curtain goes or lights come up and the old couple behind me were up and out, hitting my head before the film even ended.

Saw “Becket”..it was great seeing it on the big scree…the LafaYETTE ROCKS…AS IT ALWAYS DOES….If I can though…I have a minor complaint…..

it seems that the past few films….CITIZEN KANE and especially BECKET had a major flaw in the presentation….during the final scenes of both films with the big music buildup…that the theatre lights start to slowly come on…..is this a presentation choice???…what happened during those moments is that people start getting up from their seats, putting on coats, moving through isles and most of all, start making noise…and what happens is…the emotional moments is LOST…when Bernard Hermanns score soars when we find out what Rosebud is was lost as the lights come up…it’s very distracting and takes the viewer out of the moment (it did for me at least)…and it happened yesterday at the end of BECKET….the lights slowly came up during the final scene of a long movie and people were on the move…I felt a ltttle cheated as the emotional payoff was completely lost…which is probably why not too many people clapped, they were probably a little confused…

…is it that they want the audience out of the house as soon as possible?? or is it an artistic choice??/if it is..can I say respectfully, that it doesn’t work and it’s ruining the emotional payoff of great film endings??

I am also disapointed by the lineup of films (Great films ALL but done to death) I’m willing to bet that these films weren’t the ones that had all the votes on the forms we filled out at the last festival.

Want to see a good schedule…check out the Lafayette’s Fall lineup

“Becket”, “Man Who Would Be King”…and yes, even “Kane” next week, which I’ll be at.

One of my suggestions for Ziegfeld was to do revivals of films that were popular there…“Marooned” the first film to play the Ziegfeld….and I do consider the fact that prints of these films and many others are either poor or unavailable…I just think the lineup could have been a little more “surprising” considering all the posts read here about other festivals and 70MM screenings going on, such as, “Around world/80 days”, “Patton” “Towering Inferno” and such. I’m not complaining, (I still think its great that the Ziegfeld is having such a festival considering all the garbage out there now) I’m just being an “ungrateful nudge” Apologies all around.

I was really looking forward to the Fall series at the Ziegfeld. When I saw the list I was greatly disapointed (now don’t start the rant) Everyone who filled out those cards I’m sure put more big screen titles that aren’t shown much (I myself put down “Cleopatra”, The Alamo" to name a few) This is a dull list, (Great movies) but these films are done to death. “Spiderman”, “Batman”.. who picked those??/ Classics?? Not yet… I’ll stick with the Lafayette and see “Kane” there I guess.

I’m lucky enough to have a Widescreen good quality laserdisc(remember those) of BECKET. Great movie. Good job Pete. This schedule definitely beats the dull one that the Ziegfeld is having. I stick with the Lafayette.

I believe the front 3 theaters (shoeboxes) are still mono sound….it’s a good neighborhood theater but not one I’d travel to.

IRV…

I love the Lafayette Screenings…I’ve been going since they began…but unfortunately, yes, there are many talkers, cellphones and rudeness. Many that offend are the older crowd. When I saw “Mutiny on the Bounty” there was a group of middle aged regulars who were friends of the owner (I saw them all commiserating in the lobby) and they had a comment on every scene for the first 15 minutes (they thought they were clever but they were just obnoxious),,,finally I leaned over and said “Hey guys, do you mind?”…they stopped talking at that point as I guess they might have felt embarrassed about being disruptive…I’ve shushed many at the Lafayette….never young people….but , what can you do

Ziegfeld Man…

TRUE GRIT is the ONE film I am dying to see on the big screen.I add it to every list I fill out for “wish” films to see on the big scree..I added it to the list at the Hollywood Classic festival…I can’t believe I missed it at MOMA..I am bummed

I agree with previous posts. Considering myself a movie fanatic (as are many of you)…this is the first time that I can remember that I am not psyched to see any movie this Summer at all. DaVinci-when I get to it….MI3- saw it..ok…XMen- could care less, but I guess I’ll see it….is it me or do movies really suck now? Breakup- does anyone really want to see that?? it’s no wonder DVD sales are growing and many are buying big screen TV’s..there could be a day when more than one theater is playing a big screen classic…
