The Chinese is still part of the TCM Film Fest 2012, both the main house and the 6 plex will show films (and the Egyptian) like the last few years. I went last year and it was amazing, will try and do standby again this year. It is the weekend of April 12th. If you ever wanted to see a classic on the big screen, this is an amazing opportunity, and hopefully not the last.

Except when the Chinese is the centerpiece of the TCM Classic Film Festival every year? Unless that’s over with for the Chinese as well.
@BigJoe: Graumans & the Chinese 6 are independently owned now. They have no leverage to book major titles. Studios would rather work with large chains with enough screens to show their product. As a result, the owners are slowly transforming the theaters into mixed-use facilities where they’re adding nightclub events to compensate for the fact that they’re getting all the lower grade films.
The glory and luster of Grauman’s Chinese is over. Sad.
Hello from NYC. i find many recent postings quite fascinating. first off the many comments as to why the Chinese didn’t book one of the many “big” year end flicks but THE DARKEST HOUR instead.
Considering the many “big” year end flicks this surprises me as well since the only other theaters in the immediate area is the Cinerama Dome/Archlight and the El Capitan.
Also the many comments about raising ticket prices. i was always under the assumption that first run theaters in Manhattan had the highest prices. Obviously 3-D, IMAX and 3-D IMAX have surcharges but the highest price for a regular first run theater is $13.50 at theaters run by the Regal chain.
Yeah. It is one thing charging alot, but when your big holiday film is The Darkest Hour and Alvin and the Chipmunks it seems wrong. At least Arclight you can accumulate points and have the best films available. The Chinese really offers nothing. Sadly, Mann theatres officially closed shop this week.
I thought the $16 price-tag was only for Grauman’s, but I just discovered online that it’s also for the Chinese 6. WOW! Higher than ArcLight prices for a 1990s-style multiplex with third-rate product? I didn’t think that price-point was that big a deal for Grauman’s, but I would be amazed if #s didn’t drop for the adjoining theaters.

They already started. A couple weeks ago they closed the 6 plex and have a night time RAVE party for some dumb ass DJ. They remodeled the 6 plx and from the looks of it pulled up the carpet to make it a dance floor. The new owners are really trashy people. I’m thinking the main theatre will remain. They are star f—kers and love the premieres and foot print ceremonies. Sad, really sad. This place has little class these days.
According to the email I just received, the clubbin starts on New Years Eve! Sad.
They’ll be clubbin in there w/Lady Gaga videos projected on the big screen by the close of 2012. Mark my words!

The Chinese may have hit an all time low for its Christmas film. They are getting The Darkest Hour. Really sad.
Sadly, I have decided that I will attend the theatre one last time with my (almost) 6 year old son in 2012. I want to remember it – and him to see it – like it was before the inevitable happens.
The old days are gone, folks. Shoebox auditoriums, LieMax and Netflix rule the roost. Sigh…
Someone needs to pay for that $2m upgrade, and it’s sure not going to be the owners.
I had no idea they raised the prices to compete with Arclight. At least with Arclight though you get stronger film choices. If the Chinese wants to charge so much they should at least TRY to get some tent-pole films booked. They are still just pretty much getting the crap Arclight passes on.
I am a frequent attendee at Graumans, but got the shock of my life when I bought a senior ticket for the Sunday 5PM showing of “New Year’s Eve”. I expected to pay the usual $9 and was shocked that the price had zoomed to $12.50 and $14.75 after 6PM on weekends. The adult rate is $13.75 and $16 after 6PM on weekends. A 3D surcharge adds $3! I declined the ticket and went over to the El Capitan and got a live organist, mini stage show, a holiday bell bracelet, Muppets exhibits, a friendly usher who opened the auditorium door for me as I had a concession tray($5.75 kids combo includes a small pocorn, soda and M&Ms)for $12.
Is the Chinese management out of their gourds? With 1000 seats to fill they should LOWER their prices. They add insult to injury by ADDING sales tax to refreshments.
FYI, the best 3D bargain is at the Regency Valley 6 in North Hollywood. I saw a 3D movie on their Tuesday half-price day for $3.50($1.50 + $2 surcharge).
Sadly, I have not been to the Chinese theatres since the original Sherlock Holmes two years ago, and that was the Main theatre. The Chinese 6 I did patronize when Mann was able to book product first run. Now it is either Children’s films, move-overs or funky bookings. I would say it appears with this remodel the kept the function of showing films. It looks like this is how they intend to run the theatre. They really need to bring the Tent Pole movies into the main theatre again. The last one they had was Harry Potter last summer. Really sad for the most famous movie theatre in the world stuck with playing junk.

yes. It looks like the “Ballroom” is the lobby. Which is quite spacious.

The Chinese 6 is having an ‘event’ this Saturday. The remodel has turned into a Ballroom. They are not showing films tomorrow evening because of this event. I guess this is what they had planned for Special Events along with films.

Not sure what they have as the Holiday film; Arclight is already posting times for Sherlock Holmes 2 and they are getting Girl with Dragon Tattoo and Mission:Impossible also. Does not leave much for wide releases unless they are getting Alvin and the Chipmunks.
Hopefully the Chinese can start booking better things than Horror Films and Family Films that the Arclight doesn’t want.
Went back to Grauman’s to see the costume exhibit which is great. Costumes worn by Barbara Stanwyck, Joan Fontaine, Judy Garland, Ingrid Bergman, Humphrey Bogart, Marilyn Monroe, Vivien Leigh, Arnold Schwartzenegger, Elizabeth Taylor. They even have jewelry worn by Liz in 1963’s Cleopatra and the actual Ten Commandment tablets from 1955!
Go as this lobby exhibit could be removed any day now. FYI, “The Thing” is a well made movie and the Antarctic vistas on the big screen are great, but these type of octapus type monsters are getting very redundant.
