Looks like Rockaway will be having 3 3D screens by the time Clash of the Titans opens this weekend. Alice will have two night showtimes on the same screen as How to Train Your Dragon in 3D, which has morning and afternoon showtimes. The other two 3D screens will play Clash of the Titans while the IMAX will still show a midnight showing of Alice In Wonderland as well as Dragon in IMAX 3D. What screen got the new 3D? Hopefully it’s one of the big ones.

The stock of Dreamworks Animation is down nearly 10% after box office results for its latest movie were below estimates. I also read online that Cameron Diaz said that the new Shrek movie will be the last one. Hopefully it’s better than Shrek 3.

According to View link clash of the titans has a 12:01 am 3D showing while the 8 p.m. and 12:01 showings are in 2d. 3d or not, I’ll still enjoy the movie since it was not filmed in 3d and was converted to 3D during the first quarter of this year. Some people who’ve seen advance screenings of the movie thought it was decent. As an homage to the original, the filmmakers decided to put Bubo, the robot owl, in the remake; hopefully he’ll look good and shiny in 3D!!!

My above post is referring to the IMAX documentaries which, I believe, ski was also referring to. That would exclude the full-length movies which can play on screens of various sizes and shapes.

You’re absolutely right. I certainly don’t remember any of them playing at a regular theater. They were designed specifically for the IMAX screen.

Talk about history repeating itself: 1.4:1 was the ratio used by Paramount when they introduced VistaVision in 1954 as their high-resolution “widescreen” alternative to CinemaScope (letterbox). CinemaScope had the width but VistaVision had the sharpness. Along comes true IMAX and the sheer height of their screens kinda kills any sense of “widescreen”. But they appear to more closely resemble the combined field of vision of our eyes to which, from everything I read, no one has been able to assign an aspect ratio.

they are both ski. Avatar was shot in flat ratio for IMAX 3D and scope ratio for 3d and 2d release (i saw the scope 3d version at amc rockaway).

one thing is those imax documentaries are probably shot in true IMAX format so they would be hugely sideboxed at rockaway though no? aren’t they 1.4:1 and liemax often 1.78:1ish?

moviebuff82
moviebuff82 on March 28, 2010 at 5:56 pm

yup. They showed Deep Sea 3D for free when the IMAX first opened to a crowd of young kids. There are other documentaries that Rockaway could show that the real IMAX theaters can show. Shorter movies at the IMAX would mean more showtimes. Slimshady, any word on more 3D projectors will be installed in time for the glut of 3D movies?

Right! If TITANS were being shown in IMAX, we would have seen the trailer this morning. I wonder if we’ll ever see any of these shorter IMAX movies, e.g., HUBBLE 3D at Rockaway, and for a smaller ticket price. Probably not at this point with back-to-back 3D movies slated for 2010 and beyond. They would be great fillers though in between blockbusters. Why then did Rockaway bother to show the HUBBLE 3D trailer if they didn’t plan on showing the movie?

clash of titans will be released in both reald3d and 2d and not imax. Dragon will still be playing in Imax until Iron Man 2 comes out.

alpinedownhiller
alpinedownhiller on March 28, 2010 at 4:43 pm

the imax screen is still a little larger though than the Real3D one though no? and on the real3d screen, well like all at the new rockaway, 1.85:1 so that would be letterboxed too.

what screen will clash of titans get? imax? or does dragon have some deal to lock up the imax?

i know….two 3D movies competing against each other. Avatar’s not in 3D, the closest theater I can think of that’s showing it is in Paramus. BTW, Iron Man 2 will be shown letterbox style too, as well as inception and the new shrek movie. If it’s in IMAX then I’ll see a movie that was shot using IMAX cameras and not a DMR blowup.

Went to the 11:00am IMAX showing of DRAGON. Another winner!!! However, I did notice the aspect ratio was standard letterbox, i.e., the picture did not fill out the top and bottom of the screen. I found that disappointing since, for my extra $2 (now $12), I expected IMAX size. Do they not release these movies with different aspect ratios to fit the screen? I could have just as well seen it in RealD and saved a couple of bucks. But how can we know this in advance? The theatre was about 90% full so I guess people are still willing to pay the price increase. DRAGON pulled in over $43M this weekend…not bad considering it’s competing with ALICE which made $17M. Could we assume DRAGON could have made $60M if not for ALICE?

Too bad Cablevision won’t have the Masters in 3D…only directv and comcast will have the golf tournament…could you imagine if AMC showed golf at this theater? It won’t do well at the box office, and it’s a long game. I can predict the future when AMC shows NFL football, baseball, and other sporting events much like UFC last night.

On AMC’s Rockaway website, ticket prices for Imax 3D are +$6, a dollar more than IMAX 2D, RealD 3D is +$4, and for Alice in Wonderland, it’s +$3. Nothing much has changed for senior, child, and adult tickets. How were ticket sales for UFC at Rockaway last night? I heard it was a good event. Saw the prelims last night on spike tv.

Looks like this weekend is going to be down from last year by double digits, although it’s not that bad. At least Rockaway now has two 3-D screens and a digital IMAX screen to keep customers paying top dollar. Raising ticket prices by AMC for its 3D movies was a bad thing to do. At Best Buy in Rockaway, they have a 3D TV demo, giving viewers a wave of the future that will be cheap in the next 10 years. After the 3D hockey game, there will be a 3D world cup, which is more global than here in America. If America does well in the World Cup, then summer box office revenue will decline at the theaters.

Looks like “How to Train Your Dragon” will have a weak opening this weekend, even a bit less than “Alice In Wonderland” due to the increase in 3D ticket prices. “Alice” is only being shown at midnight in Imax for those who want to get high and watch a trippy Tim Burton movie. This is probably the first or second time that AMC has shown two IMAX movies in the same auditorium. I was on youtube and there was an ad right by a video for another liemax, this time in Kips Bay, NYC.

Which theaters did you go to ski? The outers or the inners where the movie played? By the way, I went to see “Exit Wounds” for a matinee showing at the Rockaway outer 6, a 1:40 p.m. showing on 3/31/2001 for the price of $5 for myself and I don’t know what the senior price was for my late nana.

I still vaguely remember when AMC discounts went until 4:30PM or something like that, none of this having to wake up at the crack of dawn to get the ‘twilight showing special’ nonsense hah!

The oldest ticket stub I have is 7/25/89 License to Kill Rockaway6 for a grand total of…. $3 for the 4:10PM showing!

Another thought just occurred to me besides their deploying the “value-added” concept, i.e., pay a premium for a premium product or service. I wonder if they anticipate this 3D HDTV thing to take off and they figure “let’s draw as much blood from the consumer before they start buying these sets and staying home again”. It just might offset their anticipated losses on the big screen. Then maybe they’ll reduce the prices again once they have to compete with the home theater systems. Just a theory.

This sucks…at least it’s not as bad as in Manhattan where it’s like $18.50 and up for a prime time showing of an Imax showing. Rockaway is like two dollars less than that.

JJD
JJD on March 25, 2010 at 7:01 pm

Some theatres are raising prices for 3D screens only (RealD and IMAX) while some theatres are raising prices across the board (but minimally for 2D presentations). Rockaway is still charging $6 for a 2D movie (before Noon). Then $8.50 and up for the rest of the day.

moviebuff82
moviebuff82 on March 25, 2010 at 6:40 pm

does this also affect regular ticket prices?

alpinedownhiller
alpinedownhiller on March 25, 2010 at 6:05 pm

yeah it seems a bit dodgy this move, 3D really only just became truly out and out mainstream a few months ago, all it could take is some evem crazier new prices and a few stinkers to knock off some of the lustre and if likely not at all kill off the phenom maybe end up slowing the spread of new screens

i would hope they won’t incread the film imax prices too! $16 is already getting a bit crazy!

JJD on March 25, 2010 at 5:56 pm

Not happy about the $1 increase for RealD 3D and $2 increase for IMAX 3D at AMC theaters (before Noon). Now we’re talking $10 and $12, respectively. Welcome to Capitalism at it’s worst…charge what the market will bear and screw everyone who is already struggling. I guess it’s our fault for making AVATAR and ALICE such big successes that 3D deserves an even bigger premium going forward. Hope that extra cash will at least accelerate the remaining digital installations and not wind up in the pockets of the fat cats.
