Carmike’s policy is to run a movie even just for one patron. Many of the other local chains do that too. But they have extra screens to backup the loss from the under performing screen. They might change that policy at the Crest if that happens alot. That print problem is not to uncommon when a print misses a pickup from it’s last playdate. Even with a new release film.

Going to the Crest on Wednesday for the 7:30PM encore showing of “Carmen.” Pam at the Crest is hoping to be listed on the Carmike site in a week or so. That way online tickets can be bought.

More important in my mind is that when a future Carmike website visitor punches in a movie it will pull up the Crest. For instance, Carmike has “Carmen” highlighted in their opening page, but no current listing for the Crest.

“Jack Goes Boating” opens today at the Crest with 1, 3 & 7:30 showings. I’ll definitely see it tomorrow at 3PM, as I think it’s not playing anywhere else.

In my continuing effort to support Westwood theatres I’m going to pull a tripleheader.

3PM – Jack Goes Boating @ Majestic Crest
5PM – Jackass 3D @ Regency Bruin
7:30PM – Deathwatch @ Hammer Museum’s Billy Wilder Theater

At least the Crest will have a full house on October 21 for a private screening of “Apocalyse According to Doris.” Tickets have all been allocated.

When I was growing up in Santa Monica in the mid to late 70’s the theatres only had matinees on weekends. Except (I think) Mann Criterion and maybe the Mall Cinema. The Monica Twins, Aero, Mann Wilshire and Brentwood Twins only had matinees on weekends and during the Summer.

I think during a period in the mid 70’s the GCC Avco cut matinees for the smaller screen during the week, and only had daily matinees in the large screen and the largest screen on the 2nd floor.

When I worked at the Village during the period of 1980 and 1982 weekday matinees were not that great most of the time. Only expections were during the summer or if the film was exclusive or doing very well.

It was a standard practice with the chains to drop matinees during slow times of the year. Unless the theatre was located in a high traffic area or had an exclusive engagement. And Roadshow houses only ran three matinees a week. Running evening only was mostly with single screens before the plexes.

I wonder if the Crest’s installation of 3D could knock the Regent out of being Westwood’s usual Disney venue. Regent has been playing some art stuff lately, though I think move-overs from The Landmark.

I noticed the Regent is starting films later in the day (weekdays) also. I’m wonder if that could become a Westwood trend.

The Crest is still running a 1PM show during the week. I wonder if they’ll pick up a few Village or Bruin patrons as it looks as though Regency has cut out their first screening during the week. Village doesn’t start until 4:20 and the Bruin at 4:00.

“Let Me In” is a fascinating movie and I may see it again tonight at the Crest. Probably will try to get in to the Billy Wilder Theater for tonight’s free showing of Jackie Gleason Honeymooners kinescopes. The place should be packed as the LA Times has an article today on the showing.

Not crazy about “Life as We Know It”, but will go to the Village to see it and support Regency.

Patrick Goldstein wrote an article in the LA Times years back saying that Robert Bucksbaum had paid about $3.2M in 2002. I’m surprised he got $4M; however, Bigfoot has Hong Kong investors backing and a Hong Kong-Singapore group just bought the old Robinsons-May property in Beverly Hills for about $143M. From what I understand the Crest sale is for the theater bldg only, not any part of the contiguous structures.

The LA Times article says Bigfoot paid $4 million for the Crest. Any idea what Bucksbaum paid for it? Did he make any money off this deal?

I was invited to a brunch at the Crest last week and they took us up to the booth and they were very proud to show off the brand new Sony 4K projector, which was just installed the week before. The next three movies booked at the Crest are going to be in Real 3D

They installed Sony 4K, really? Terrific news. I thought Carmike only used Christie.

Carmike just spent a ton of money installing a new silver screen and a Sony 4K digital projector in the Crest

Let Me In bombed due to Relativity’s terrible marketing. They basically dumped the film and spent its marketing budget to promote The Social Network.

Today’s LA Times has an interesting piece on the Crest. Apparently, the new owner is a company called Bigfoot Entertainment out of Venice, and Carmike is merely managing the theater for Bigfoot. Bigfoot and Carmike are both owned in part by the same private eqity firm in Hong Kong. They intend to show 75% big studio releases, but plan to reserve 25% of the Crest’s screen time for independent features produced by Bigfoot….

Sorry folks. I had to post this in order to deactivate my notification status for this particular theater.
My inbox has been overflowing with all the otherwise welcome activity this theater is receiving as of late.

Reply to BradE41: You should be interested in seeing “Let Me In” at the Crest to compare it to the original. I saw a group of UCLA students across the street and walked over and told them to see the movie.

Here’s a SaMo Secret: park at the library on Santa Monica and Sixth. It’s never full. There are a couple of parking structures like that on the edge of downtown, and the city is looking at ways to even out the demand so the Promenade parking isn’t so slammed.

As far as knocking down a parking structure for a new theater — they’re talking about building a new one on land the city owns at Arizona and 5th.

markinthedark
markinthedark on October 4, 2010 at 9:53 am

Santa Monica doesn’t have enough parking as is. Those structures fill up on the weekends.

BradE41
BradE41 on October 4, 2010 at 9:36 am

I totally agree about the Promenade, The Grove and the AMC Century 15. Those theatres never factor into my choices. I live in West Hollywood but will still take a trip to Westwood to patronize the Village, Bruin, Crest and even the Regent. I’ll pass on the AVCO though. The only new theatre I love is Arclight Hollywood. It is an extraordinary theatre complex in every level. For the most part I despise the newer multiplexes but Arclight is the rare exception.

And taking away a parking structure in Santa Monica? What is wrong with that picture?

I’ll definately make a trip to the Crest soon. Not interested in Let Me In, even though it is supposed to be quite good. I’m a big fan of the original.

As promised I attended the Saturday 4PM showing of “Let Me In” at the Crest. Thanks for the suggestion to try Veteran-I parked for free there. There were nine of us for the show. I plan to go back on Tuesday and see the movie again, actually quite spooky in a quirky way.

Driving past the AMC AVCO at 7PM on Saturday I saw a line waiting to get in for “The Social Network.” The same movie is playing at the Vista and the 9:45PM show on Sunday had a huge line at 9:20 and probably sold out. Los Feliz is its own little world and certainly supports the Vista and Los Feliz 3.

The Crest appears way too overstaffed-I think I counted five on Saturday vs. the usual 2-3 person unit. I forgot his name, but I had a long talk with the long-time Crest employee with the ponytail. He said Carmike is anxious for feedback. I told him to get Diddy Riese cookies and ice cream into the theater, push corporate discount programs to local businesses and govt agencies. Also, to establish contact with major Asian travel agencies that book group tours from China and Japan. Hollywood still has sway with the Asian market and the Crest could be part of a tour program. FYI, Amway recently rewarded 5000 of their Chinese employees with a trip to L.A.

Sunday update: The Crest still has last week’s movie on their message line. I keep telling the Crest and they keep telling me its been corrected. It’s not!
