I think it was a subconscious decision on my part! I highly recommend you rent the “Zombie” DVD. Then imagine what it would have been like at the Haven! Kids now-a-days will never know what it’s like to catch a double-feature at a neighborhood theater. Then walk home with a bag of fresh zeppoles and by the time you get home your hands are sticky and powdery!

Bway, the Haven WAS on the right side of Jamaica Ave if headed to Jamaica. It was most definitely on the SOUTH side of Jamaica Avenue.

Thanks for posting your movie memories here, Adrian Collazo ! I am 53 years old, like you, a horror movie fan, and saw many films at both the Haven and the Ridgewood. I remember the posters in the subway for “Zombie” in the summer of 1980, though I did not go to see it. I can see it in my mind’s eye as I write this. I modified the Stones' single “Emotional Rescue” to be about “Zombie” :

I’M COMING NOW, TO KILL AND EAT YOU !

I’LL COME TO YOUR EMOTIONAL RESCUE !

Did you DELIBERATELY walk home on the (north) cemetery side, of Jamaica Avenue, to scare yourself sh*tless ?

I have SUCH fond memories of the Haven. I’m now 40 years old, so I went to see all those exploitation Horror movie double features in the early 80s as a teenager. If it wasn’t the Haven, then it was the Ridgewood. I’ll NEVER forget the time I saw “Zombie” (I was about 13 years old) at the Haven filled with screaming teenagers. This movie was notoriously graphic and I LOVED all those Italian horror flicks. The kids had NO idea what they had gotten themselves into. Some of them ran out of the theater. The rest settled in for a gory fun-fest! Nothing like wild screaming kids having the time of their lives. Unforgettable. I would peek through my fingers practically the whole time. Then the best part. On my way home, walking down Jamaica Ave., pitch dark, right along-side the cemetary. I was scared sh*tless. I’ll never forget it. I will always remember the Haven with fondness. My 2nd favorite Haven memory was seing “The Evil Dead”. To this day – one of the defining movie-going experiences of my childhood. My appreciation for 70s-80s horror movies came from the Haven.

I think the address may be wrong. I always thought the Haven was on the right side of Jamaica Ave if headed to Jamaica….but if I am not mistaken, the even numbers are that side.

Wow, I actually remember going to most of those films. I also remember checking what film was playing every Friday afternoon to see if The Empire Strikes Back was ever billed.

Thanks PKoch,
Pretty sure it was “Women’s Prison Massacre”.

“Women’s Prison Massacre” was indeed released in the USA in 1985.

Here’s the link to the IMDb page, if you wish to read it, to perhaps jog your memory :

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085250/

I think it played on a double bill with “Reform School Girls”.

Thanks, Panzer65.

“Women’s Prison Massacre”, perhaps ? That title comes quickly to mind, along with “Reform School Girls”, from 1985 or so.

Some women’s jail movie, cant remember the name.

Excuse me : that should have been “Forty Carats”, srarring Deborah Raffin, that I saw at the Haven, along with “The Conversation”, at the Haven, late August 1974.

Gene Hackman also starred in “I Never Sang With My Father”, in which older long-time star Melvyn Douglas played his father.

I also saw “Five Easy Pieces” at the Haven, early 1971, perhaps on a double bill with “I Never Sang With My Father”, because both share the theme of children coming home to aid or be with ailing parents.

Rustler’s Rhapsody : release date Friday 10 May 1985.

Brewster’s Millions : release date Wednesday 22 May 1985.

No, Panzer65, I’ve never visited the retail store that now occupies the former Haven Theatre. I’ve only glimpsed it from the Jamaica el. Even at a glance, it’s obvious that it was once a movie theater. There are two friends I have at work from Woodhaven I could ask about the store that was once the Haven, though.

ken mc : Coincidence ? Should we cue Harry Lubin’s eerie theme for “One Step Beyond” ?
