So much for Black Films playing here,RICHARD PRYOR LIVE a comedy concert film does quite well with a mix audience,Something you would not see at the IMPERIAL.Playes in COLUMBIA 2.
One of the lowest Grossing pictures is playing most likely Third run in a new theatre,Yes, CAR WASH plays for one week in COLUMBIA 2.Why, this is booked in a county 90% white makes no sense. Play it in South Augusta,but not here.
Yeah,I had an adding machine with paper shooting out of it.Karen was probably right,all my theatre buddies at Plitt had single Screens while i had a twin. By, 10:00 at the latest for Plitt I was ready to plan my night out while Tom and Charles were finished were done with paperwork at IMPERIAL AND National Hills.
I was always in a hurry,but I could do a BOR. Heck, I did PAYROLL for our theatre everyweek.No, WE never reused paper,LOEWS must have been as cheap as GEORGIA THEATRES.
Did you have an adding machine Mike???WE had the old timey type with the roll of paper on it. Our City Manager would not tear off the paper after using the adding machine and would reroll the paper backwards and use it again, he said it saved the company money.

Karen Harpe and Mike Rogers disagree on Karen being an Assistant Manager when Mike was there. “Mike couldn’t Add, I was alawys redoing our Box office reports,our daily reports,weekly reports and monthly reports!"Karen said. Tommy Capers jumps in,"Karen, that is why you felt like you were an assistant manager!” Karen said “Mike can’t accept a woman being his equal!” Well, I wasn’t taking all of this I asked Mr.Tinney who was at the REUNION party and he backed KAREN. I went off and got a beer.

Tom Weidmeiere tells this story. “We all drove up to the theatres and found NO managers! Bob Smith the relief projectionist was working his usual thursday night had keys and got us in: Still NO managers. We finally found out that Mr.Tinney was broke down somewhere,and it was Mike’s day off. We knew where he lived and someone drove to his place,but no Mike.
All we could do is open the doors,explain our problem to the public and take exact change.None of us could open the safe or even get the Ticket cartridges out for the Box Office. Bob helps out with the Popcorn and somehow Mr.Tinney gets there.

Also not too long a big Wind storm hit the area and blew the big blue numbers 1 and 2 off the marquee. We replaced them with much smaller red colored numbers, couldn’t understand why the contractor wasn’t called back to repair or replace those huge blue numbers.They really made the Marquee. At least i have pictures.
I remember not long after opening COLUMBIA 1 and 2 a Heavy rain came one night and we found quite a bit of water in Columbia One house left of the screen. Improper gutters. We had to rope off several rolls of seats. Funny how that just hit me. And it has to since I can’t get any of my so called theatre buddies here to add stories!

I have added MORE stories that i somehow remember at all the Augusta theatres I worked at. even Daniel Village. Regency 1.2.3. cinemas and Regency Exchange Cinemas,that a friend managed.
Geez, I forgot my three piece white suit,like Steve Martin which I wore quite a bit.
IF you get a chance go to GASTON MALL theatre. I have a story there on a Xrated film clip the Projectionist added to a trailer. THose crazy Plitt Theatre guys, I know.
Did not know that you were a Disco King Mike. You should have seen my 3-piece Peach colored pined stripped suit. I would not be caught dead it it now.Of course this was the late 70’s, I had a mullet too.WE were pimping!!!
I forgot my John Travolta Dicoboots that i wore with high thick heels making a 5'11'‘ Assistant look at least 6'3". The girls behind the snack bar said they looked tacky.They probably were tacky.For some reason and I just remember it all through those years i was usually in boots. A faze?
No Mike Loews provided the red jackets for our doorman and ushers,but the managers had to wear our own suits.I guess they thought with our “LARGE SALARIES” that we could afford to wear our suits. I had 4 that I would rotate working 6 days a week. I only traded passes for a parking space behind the Loews Crescent as it was downtown and we did not have a parking lot.
DID you say YOUR OWN suits? At least ABC/PLITT provided an ugly red jacket. The GCC dark blue was more conservsative coat. Can’t believe you had to BUY a coat,but knowing you i bet you traded PASSES for like every manager I ever knew! IF you didnot use passes:just let me think you did.
Yeah, The theatre business today is a step above BURGER KING. Really, I half way enjoyed wearing a suit and Tie,even though I gripped about it, I mean it made you look like you had a little Authority even though we were in our early 20’s.
But Tisloews I am glad we didn’t do BOWTIES.
Hey Mike ours were clip-ons,but large type butterflys as someone called them.WE looked cool though.I do not know about you but when I got in Management we had to wear our own suits and neckties.No golf shirts and slacks like the modern managers.
MAn,I am glad we didn’t have to wear bow ties. I finally gave up on clip on ties when my Projectionist Mr.Ballard gave me a tie for Christmas that i had to learn to TIE. It had a tiny golfer putting on the tie with the quote “Oh, S—–. He said that that was my favorite word, When i got to GCC it still must have been my favorite saying according to the Concession Girls. Damn I miss those days.
Mike we had the ugly red jackets but we did not have any patches.We had our LOEWS name tags and our black bow ties. We had had to have our own black pants and white shirts.We looked cool though!Also we did not have to have them cleaned ourselves, but Loews had them cleaned at lease twice a year even if they did not need it or not.Ha Ha big spenders!
I am so glad Jim Neely at the IMPERIAL kept his red ABC THEATRE coat.I have it in my closet next to my armpit stained GCC coat.{always too lazy to go to the dryers]
Well, I had known for awhile that ABC THEATRES had sold out to PLITT THEATRES. WE kept the old red jackets,but the ABC THEATRE patch came off for a very ugly PLITT THEATRES. Us guys from the ABC THEATRES here would wear the jackets out to area nightspots and I swear the Cocktail waitresses would always think we were some big shots from the network. Even though it had Theatres right below the ABC logo.
We figured they just saw the Logo so often seen on TV, Sometimes depending on the B.S. one could shoot it would be good for a few free drinks.
Mr.Tinney has booked a twenty serial cliffhangers to run with our Midnight Shows. Then thinks Maybe,KID SHOWS? Either way the cans set in booth at COLUMBIA ONE for months before anyone Asks were they are . We never show the first one.
COLUMBIA TWO opens with George Burns and Brooke Shields in JUST YOU AND ME KID. Does some 1st week business,but no OH,GOD.

THUNDER AND LIGHTING with David Carridine and Kate Jackson
rated PG. Does pretty good business. KUNG-Fu and CHARLIE’S ANGELS maybe that is the draw.
