Its a shame that so-called humans can wreak so much terror in a place that is supposed to be “fun” to go to.I really can`t believe the razor and barbed wire at the concession stand and lobby, but I have to believe it really was there. If the Kings ever reopens(And I hope it does} I pray the same events will not take place there. We have come a long way from the innocence of laughing at the matron and throwing Milk Duds to outright murder and shootings, and it is a pathetic state of affairs.

Tommy X (if you are still out there)…Russell Crowe is at it again! Saw him on Letterman a few days after the “cell phone” incident, and I hate to say it but he came accross as a jerk! Great actor- to be sure, but every other word he says is “ya know”! Also “Cinderella Man” is a fairly good movie even though most critics panned it.

Gustavelifting…What happened when you went to the Kings? Was there anybody there? Hope you did not make the trip from Long Island for nothing. You may be able to film inside the Jersey. If I were you, I would ask the president(or somebody with the publicity dept) if it will be OK. I guess you can go on a weekend day while the volunteers are restorinmg the balcony seats, this would probably be a good time to get in. There is no air conditioning so you will probably sweat like a pig. While you are there make sure to see the Stanley wich is about a block away- right over and accross the railroad bridge. This magnificent theater is now a Jehova`s Witness temple, but they DO give tours and allow visitors to see it. Believe me, you will NOT be dissapointed! It is worth seeing, and you will be amazed at what they did to it. Please let me know how you made out if you go. I1m thinking about volunteering myself in the near future if nothing develops with the Kings.

A friend of mine who lived in Chicago remembers the Bugg theater. He tells me the same company also owned a theater called the “Roche”. Just kidding!

JJ Fink.. A good rule of thumb is to arrive for the movie a good 10 minutes AFTER the posted time. If a movie starts at, lets say 4.30, it will actually begin at 4.40. This way you will not have to watch none of “The 20”, and n maybe only one trailer. Works for me everytime. Also, regarding “bootleg” movies . I recently purchased “Robots”, “Sahara”,and “Star Wars- Revenge of the Sith”-even though I saw it on the big screen the other day, and the quality of these coppies are pretty good, and watchable. Even though I DO NOT advocate their sale, the quality has improved from the bootleg version of “Titanic” where the videotaper got the heads of the theater patrons on the recording!

Rhett… Got no info on that, but I recently took the Stanley tour, and it was awesome! It truly is a pity that so many of these grand old theaters have fallen victm to the wrecking ball. Thank God the Stanley and the very nearby Loews Jersey still stand. The Jersey will have no events until September- the air conditioning is not working. Until then, I can only dream about the great experiences that I will have at the Jersey when it re-opens.Like travelling back to another time.

John J Fink… The endless trailers are nothing new, but the endless commericials for such things as soda, theme parks , Hyundai autos, TV series, restaurant chains, hair products, computers ans cell phones{of course}a are not helping the movie going experience. Of the six trailers that were shown, not one film interested me.I just will NOT pay 10.25 to see a movie based on an old TV series {Bewitched{ or a remake of a movie that was mediocre at best when it was new. It is a shame, but it really DOES look like Hollywood has finally run out of ideas.

Went to the Sheepshead today to see Cinderella Man and Star Wars the newest edition. Even though the films were good, I also have some good news about the theater itself. It was a lot cleaner than it was on my last visit( maybe because it was on a Monday} and the staff seemed a lot more pleasant than usual. They STILL have the endless commercials and trailers, but now they are telling you to shut off your cell phones! A sign of the times prehaps, but several patrons were still using those insidious things- with those annoying “ring tones”.Other than that{maybe Im old fashioned about so called progress} it really was NOT a bad experience. Now, if I can find another movie that is worth seeing, maybe Ill go back.

RE the air conditioning… the Jersey DOES have air, but it doesn`t work too good. It was on Sat 6-4 for Tron and Star Trek II and while it was cool, it just isnt strong enough to cool the entire theater, especially on a hot and humid day {or in this case, a night}.

Bill Huelbig… Is there any way we can “suggest” the Jersey management to screen this movie? Prehaps a “lost gems” show will get it a screening.

Tron-One of the first CGI films along with Star Trek II- the Wrath of Khan – the best entry in the franchise promises to be a great show! See you there on 6-4. Also to Bill Huelbig, thanks for the websites concerning the FWJV. Got the DVD and it is spectacular, just the way I remember it from the Channel 9 movie. The review was also terrific. Thank God the DVD player has a “pause” feature. This way I can freeze my favorite scenes to enjoy the artistry and obvious love of the subject matter and the look and feel of the late Victorian era that makes this film a joy to behold.

Jim Rankin…. Sounds interesting. Only bad part for me anyway is that I will be on a cruise vacation at that time. However, I do intend to log onto their website to find out more about this group. Thanks for passing it on to us!

RE the Jersey… To quote Siskel and Roeper..“the balcony is now closed”.The volunteers working at the Jersey are going to rehab the balcony soon- if it now. Just to give you an idea of what that will entail will be to renovate hundreds of seats. They will be removed and years of grime, chewing gom, soda (and other )spills will have to be cleaned among other things. This is a major renovation task that undoubtely will have to be done at the Kings.Ain`t gonna happen overnight! Be prepared.

The City of NY will not pay for the renovation of the Kings, but would probably offer some incentives that will make it attractive to whomever is willing to tackle the project. And, speaking about tackling the project, is there anyone out there in the “peanut gallery” who is willing to volunteer long unpaid hours-ala the Jersey and do their part to help out?Think about it. You may have to paint, plaster, peel, scrape, and do many other things such as usher, sell tickets, sell refreshments, etc, etc, etc.I personally DO want to get involved in it on some level. Do you?

Astynax….While growing up in NY in the early 60s(when I was able to go to the movies alone or with friends), I never remembered any segregated theaters anywhere.None of the big movie palaces in Brooklyn or even Manhattan had any restricted seating policies. Actually, it all very democratic( in the true meaning of the word}. You bought your ticket, you went in, and you saw the show.My friends from grade school were a mixed group, both racially and ethnically, and we never encountered any problems whatsoever.

CC connoly…Saw the “Truman Show” when it first opened in the spring of 1998, and I absolutely hated it. However, I caught it on cable on a cruise ship vacation about a year later, and after watching it for the second time, I realized what a good film this was!The concept was intriuging and very well handled.Jim Carrey showed what a fine actor he could be in a dramatic role, and the ending was totally mind blowing!Peter Weir did a fine directing job, just as good as his earlier works like “The Last Wave”, “Gallipoli”, and “Year of Living Dangerously”.Saw “Eternal Sunshine” recently, and although it was not perfect, it still was top notch and was superior to most of the current swill thats out there.

RE rare or rarely seen si fi films, does anyboby out there remember a film called “The Incredible world of Jules Verne”. I remember seeing it on the old Channel 9 movies in the late 60s and early 70s.This unique and visually stylistic film was shot in black and white and featured an amazing combination of graphics, animation and model sequences that resembled 19th century book engravings.I think it was made in Czechoslovakia in the early 60s. Even today with the CGI and computer animation, this would blow most of them away!

CC Connoly… Regardless of what anyboby thought of Mel Gibsons non-epic on the last hours of Christs life, he took a chance{even using ancient Aramic language as opposed to non accurate English) and made a film that people actually went to see. It is that rare film that got people talking-and thinking as well. And I agree. The late 60s and most of the 70s was a great decade for movies. The downward trend began in the mid 80s and continues to this day.

CC Connoly….I an sure the Palisades is not as bad as the Sheepshead, but I take your word for it.I have ranted about the sorry state of todays cinema on other entries. The only 2 bright spots on this summers movie horizon seem to be the new “Star Wars” and “Cinderella Man with Russell Crowe.I hope the new "Star Wars” is not as bad as “The Phantom Menace” 6 years ago when it opened, I went to see it with my friend Mike B. We sat there dumbfounded. When the “podrace” sequence unreeled, we just looked at each other and said" ripoff of the chariot race in Ben Hur- our favorite movie. Hope the new one is better. I will be dissapointed if “Cinderella Man ” is a bust.Aside from “The Passion of the Christ” the last movie I saw was “Master and Commander”.It was excellent and exciting. The production team really did their homework and it showed. As a ship modeler and naval historian, I can say this one was dead-on accurate from start to finish. It seems that Russell Crowe can do no wrong!Bet you can~t wait to see “Bewitched”. Marvelous. Another lousy TV show becomes a movie. Whats next? A movie version of "Mork and Mindy" That wouldnt surprise me. Even the novel idea of an all black cast in the movie version of the “Honeymooners” probably wont save it from the junk heap either. As far as Tom Cruise is concerned, can this guy Really act? He has 2 facial expressions and Im sure he will be hard pressed to come up with a 3rd! I`m beginning to think that Hollywood has finally run out of ideas. They have all but written off the adult moviegoers. As long as they keep on giving us these MORON MOVIES, it will be a cold day in hell before I go again. It may be sad, but it is certainly true.

C Connoly…. As Hamlet would have said, “Aye, theres the rub”.Maybe the variables in Jersey City were different than those of Flatbush, maybe they are not.Jersey City has made a “comeback” of sorte while Flatbush is set to comeback soon. Prehaps it will not be as gentrified as Jersey City, but with areas in Brooklyn such as Williamsburg, Red Hook, and Greenpoint emerging as desirable, even trendy areas, who knows? The BAM Rose cinema does feature “art” and foreign films, but, again this area{ downtown Brooklyn{ is closer to Manhattan than Flatbush.Bruce 1 is right. We all talk the good talk, but who is REALLY going to do something? I have a job and my schedule is very flexible, so I can use my somewhat limited knowledge to do my part. The whole trick of this seems to be contacting the right people and pitching this idea to them. But then again, who ARE the right people? As an arts center the uses can be many. What theater in Brooklyn has ever revived classic films? Seeing a great movie on the large screen has no comparison to watching the same film on video or DVD.I am sure that most of us who post entries on this theater all share a common love and respect for these great old palaces, but the sad part of it all is that too many people just do not care.

To everyone above in the last few postings…What if there was NO Path subway that stopped near the Jersey? What if there was NO parking ( at a lot or on the street?} Would that discourage people to go? Besides classic films, the Jersey has operas, concerts, independent film festivals, Afro American events, jazz, and many other features. The same venue would make the Kings viable as an entertainment center. Pickets outside the theater( thats so 1960s )would only discourage would be investors and big money people.

This is NOT a theater. ITs a factory. Even with the stadium seating gimmick( wich resembles a balcony) this place was designed to ( if I may quote the theme from RAWHIDE) move “em in and move "em out.It IS the only game in town and UA knows it. Everything that is wrong with todays movies is what is wrong about the Sheepshead! Its is beyond dirty. the teenage morons who work here dont give a rats ass about anyone or anything, the snacks are overpriced, the bathrooms reek of urine, the stench of the butter and the popcorn is sense numbing, there are too many commercials and trailers, the "acid trip” image that plays on the screen, all the other “dont"s) they screen with the trailers are only just some of its faults. Wise up UA do something about this mess, or keep on wondering why movie attendence is down 20 percent from last year. And also HGollywood {if you are reading this) GIVE US BETTER MOVIES instead of the hard sell hell you force upon us!!
