It is sad to let everybody out there know, that this theater its been thorn down by the city of IB. Lasted many years between vacant and lastly serving as a church. Many good memories go with this pretty theater. Lost, but not forgotten, lives now in our memories…. FAREWELL TO THE GREAT “PALM THEATRE” Imperial Beach California…..

This nice theater was operated many years by COTSA (COMPANIA OPERADORA DE TEATROS)as well as most of the theaters in the city.
Very spacious, we enjoyed many great movies from the time.
The most I remember from this theater is the big advertising mural that was displayed on one of the sides of the structure showing a big girl picture holding a lemon. (probably advertising the LEMON SUPERMARKETS chain).
Does anybody remembers this..?
Those were the days.

In the late 90;s if im not mistaking, they started using the theater facilities for boxing and other sports shows, then finally closed doors again.

Cine teatro Bujazan, perhaps the most legendary theater in the whole Baja California state.
Its hard to understand how the good people of Tijuana let this gem to die so bad, specially because there is no other opera, fine arts, vaudeville or cultural museum in the area.
After the 80’s fire that totally destroyed the building, far from rebuilding it, the property went on complete abandonment and neglection.
Years and years of decay, until finally someone cut a deal with perhaps the family owning the property, and by only swepping out the dust and clearing debris, now the empty shell gets rented for almost any public purpose.
From urban concerts, to popular town festivities, political meetings, this place is now an iconic ruin to meet with style.

Katy, I cant tell you how many times I been sure that something good is finally happening to the theater by a small change outside, or a different sign being displayed on the marquee.
A few years ago, I heard that the building was to be finally demolished by the city, due to structural hazard, also signs alerting people from danger were posted outside… well its 2010 and this big boy still stand high….

This theater remains now days almost in its entirety.
I believe its been used as a huge “maquiladora” warehouse wich in my
opinion its what its been keeping this place still standing, unlike the other city theater buildings abandoned to decay.

The Reforma Theater, was one of the most important urban “moviehouses” in the city.
Back in the late seventies, early eighties, showcased many popular movies of the time.
It faced 2 different streets for access, and the original facade, I believe was the one on 6th street, was truly a wonder.
We went there to see movies like SUPERMAN,THE BLUE LAGOON,and many others.

Hi Ken, thank you so much for the wonderful pictures, indeed a sad situation with this clasic cinemas, specially CINE BUJAZAN, I wonder how far we are from finding the way of making profit on remodeling every possible classic theater in the world.
Somehow re inventing the way people used to show up to the theater, big and spacious, rich in ornamental architecture and old fashion amenities.
I am not against modernism, but if I want to get into a little square cage, full of sofisticated technology and watch digital video quality, well.. plenty of places now days haa..
Anyway lets keep dreaming..

David, its been a while since the last comment on this magnificent theater… any updates…? how is the remodeling plans going so far.. this theater is been my favorite historical building in the nehiborhood, since I missed the oportunity to get inside when it was still operating, Im one of the many people who walk around the perimeter to maybe take a glance thru a wipe down window or to discover any signs of remodeling.
Whats going on inside..? whats with the scull painted outside..? sorry about so many questions.
Mario
