Roosevelt Theatre

A bunch of ads for the predecessor of the Roosevelt. This building was around in the 1840s all the way to 1922 until condemned following a failed inspection. In the upper left corner is the day that the Lyceum became an African American theater (September 23, 1917) with “The Smarter Set.” To the right is where you could see live 1919 World Series presentations on the Electric Diamond Play by Play Board.

Second row: John H. Havlin purchased the theatre creating Havlin’s Theatre, a place for live entertainment. On August 19, 1900, the name Lyceum was reattached to the facility until its closure. To the left is another ad for the African American acts and jazz shows that lit up the Lyceum in the early 1920s.

Third Row: J.C. Thomas bought the Morris Chapel turning it into Thoms' Hall / Thoms' Music Hall. The property stays in the Thoms family well into the 20th century. To the right is another ad for Havlin’s with famous boxer John L. Sullivan making a dramatic turn on the stage in 1893.

Fourth row: An an for the Morris Chapel Lyceum. The Lyceum Theatre in Cincy dates back to December 3, 1852 at Sixth and Vine. It paired with the Morris Chapel to present entertainment from roughly 1868-1870. In 1895 and 1896, the venue became the first of two Freeman Theaters in Cincy (at right) and then it was under Hubert Heuck’s operation as the Star Theatre in 1896 and 1897 (lower right).
