Merrylands Mall retail center was originally built by Stocks & Holdings (now Stockland Corporation) in 1972. In 1976 the company decided to establish a cinema in a previously vacant space on the second floor. An application was lodged for the single screen 469 seat ‘Classic Cinema’ which was approved on 18 June 1976. In September, Mall Manager Mr. T. Lee announced that the $500,000 cinema would open in January 1977 and be operated by an unnamed ‘major’ exhibition firm.
