The 6 screen multiplex wasn’t put on the site of where the Drive In was. They converted the single screen Cinema Showcase (1111 N.E. D st Grants Pass, OR) to a 6 screen in around 1990, and changed the name to The Movies 6 which just closed about 2 weeks ago (sadly). The Drive In closed in the late 90s/early 2000s, and now an old folks home is there.

I’m in the process of trying to archive (digitize and hopefully put it on the internet) our towns newspapers microfilm. I’ll try to find out when this theater opened and closed. I eat all the time right next door to where the theater WAS, now it’s bank (different building.

View link here’s a pic I took today at the theater and was saddened by the state of it. This is how these geniuses treat it. I went by earlier with my mom and was using her camera phone to at least get a pic of it in case they were gone when I could go by with my camera. I was standing there taking some pics and I said to the guy in the Ducks hat “it’s a shame they closed it” and he said grumbling “movies suck anyways” so I yelled “THAT’S YOU’RE OPINION” and walked away. really made me angry.

I just read in the newspaper today that this theater is closing this Sunday (Jan. 2nd, 2011). A real shame because I have many fond memories of this place. We have the Southgate (that was built in 1997) But this is one of the theaters I used to go to with my wife when we were in High School. I could tell that something wasn’t right in the last 5+ years, because they updated the Southgate (a 4 screen) up to an 8 screen, and they put stadium seating in. But they didn’t do any remodeling to the Six. Oh well, bye bye good ol' theater.

This is a really special place for my wife and I, it was the first place we went on a date :) I was really sad when it closed, though I was just glad to not see it torn down to get replaced by a parking lot. though it isn’t a first run movie house anymore, it hasn’t changed a bit (though it has gotten a facelift outside) I go in there and the magic is there. unlike others that have been chopped up into multiplexes.

btw. they still show movies there (classics like the Star Wars trilogy and Easy Rider) about every month or about every other month

we went here tonight to see IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON, great movie, great theater, though it’s a pitty it was cut up into a muliplex, it’s still nice, but I can only imagine what it looked like in it’s prime.
