Thanks for the new Ezella information. It is my all-time fave nabe.
According to films101.com
http://www.films101.com/y1946r.htm
there were only 48 pictures released on 1948, not even close to a record. How about 160 films on 2004?
Please post anything else you remember about any of the theatres you mention.

No. All my records show it at E105th & Superior. Would you like the phone number? GArfield 2222.

To the best of my knowledge, the Ezella was never upgraded in seating capacity. The 1400 figure sounds about right. The Ezella was all on one floor, with no balcony.

The address of the Ohio Theatre is 1513 Euclid Ave.

The “Superior” opened in 1930 and closed in 1950. I don’t know the seating capacity, but it appears rather small.

The Superior Theatre was at 8421 Superior. I believe the building is still there as a “church.” The Circle was 10210, the Park 10209, the Alhambra 10403 (all Euclid Ave).
All the rest are gone. Cleveland Clinic rules the area.

Oh, I just found an old picture of the Lake. I’ll bet you’ve never seen this one before.

A great shot looking down Euclid Ave. from Playhouse Sq. from sometime in the 30s.

According to my infallable records (he-he) the Esquire was originally the Lake. Have no records, but the Lake probably goes back to the twenties.
It was almost directly across Euclid Ave. from the RKO Palace. It closed (approximately) in 1950 (as the Esquire) and became the studios for WXEL-TV 9 (which later became (WJW-TV 8).
I was in there when it was a TV studio. They left the seats in place as well as the stage. The engineers who worked there told me it was quite a “rat trap” in it’s last days. Now it is a beautiful and scenic parking lot. (what else?).
