New Theatre for Scottsdale

Through the enterprise of Mr. Tasman Newman. Scottsdale is to be furnished with an up-to-date theatre, built on modern lines, and capable of seating up to 1000 persons. Mr Newman intends to undertake what the Municipal Council and the rate payers might have done months ago. The land for the proposed building was purchased some time ago, and is situated in King Street, the site being ideal for the purpose. It has been fenced and cleared and Mr. Newman is now getting everything into trim preparatory to commencing building operations

The building is to be of concrete, with a two storied imposing frontage of ornate design, and its total depth will be 125 feet by 40 feet. Provision is being made for two shops, each 12 wide, with a depth of 20 feet, and these will flank the main entrance, which is to be 16 ft. wide. One eight feet staircase will lead to the dress circle and return by two 4-feet stairways. The main floor will be 80 feet by 40 feet, and will be fitted with tip-up iron standard chairs in sections, to permit of removal and storage under the stage when the building is required for dancing or other similar purposes. Its seating capacity will be 558. The dress circle will be fitted with similar chairs, fixed and upholstered, and will accommodate 176 persons, making a total seating capacity of 734, though there would be no difficulty in providing for 1000 perlons should the necessity arise.

The stage will be 5 feet high, having an opening of 23 feet, with a depth of 25 feet, and the electric lighting effects are to be equal to anything in the cities. Mr. Newman is a competent electrician with long experience, and he intends the lighting effects to be a big feature in the new building, in fact, the very latest in electric stage lighting equipment. Upstairs, each side of the foyer or lobby, will be, two rooms above the shops, suitable for cloak rooms or any other purposes associated with a modern theatre.

A wide veranda of the cantilever type is provided, and judging from the plans, which Mr. Newman has had prepared, the whole building will present a very fine appearance, and be an outstanding acquisition to the architectural appearance of the street.
