Opened in February 1937 with "Pennies From Heaven", the Tift Theatre originally had seating for 1,400 and was designed in Art Moderne style, complete with a multicolored tile facade and neon-lit vertical sign and marquee. The interior of the Tift had an unusual theme to its decor, the circus. The theater lasted exactly half a century before it went dark.

Soon afterward, the community gathered behind the Tift to save it, and it was restored and refurbished for use for various forms of live entertainment, as well as being available for special events.

An Allen theatre organ was donated and installed in the Tift during its restoration and reopening by John Clark McCall, Jr. Mark and Carrie Renwick, of Jacksonville, FL, were musical artists (organist and soprano) featured in the Tift's inagural gala.
