A two-story theatre building, which later became a supermarket, exhibited motion pictures here and was in operation from at least 1913 to 1950.

More information would be appreciated.

I previously raised a question about this theatre at the listing for the Stoddard Theatre, but no has ever answered it. But I believe that this photo is of the ex-77th Street Theatre, even though it was published in the book "The Movies," by Griffith & Mayer, with a claim that it showed the ex-Stoddard Theatre:

I have seen this picture shown so many times over the years. It is always to highlight what television did to the movies.

And I believe it shows the former 77th Street Theatre, which was on the east side of Broadway. If you look at the upper left of the photo, you will see buildings presently occupied by Zabar's on the west side of Broadway, around 79th or 80th Street.

Two photographs of the 77th Street Theatre that I took in July 2003:

Thanks, Ken! Your photos seem to confirm that the image that I posted above on 12/11/05 shows the 77th Street Theatre as a supermarket. Portions of the facade, as well as an apartment building at the next corner, are the same.

In 1916, this was being advertised as Springer's 77th St. Theatre, "The Elite Picture Playhouse." Programs changed daily, with continuous showings from 1:30 to 11 PM:

And here's a new link to an image of the 77th St. Theatre as Garden Super Market:

I read somewhere that this theatre was either designed by Thomas Lamb or was an existing structure renovated into a theatre designed by Thomas Lamb.

The Stoddard, or Standard Theatre, was on 90th and Broadway. It too became a "Garden Market". My grandmother lived accross Broadway and I clearly remember the marquee. I heard that the Stoddard lacked air conditioning and would close during the summer.

The Office for Metropolitan History's building permits database lists a permit for a project at 2182-2186 Broadway issued in 1913. A two-story brick theatre and stores on a lot 55'x130' was designed by New Jersey architect Fred Robbin Jr., for an Eva J. Coe.
