Construction of the Aloha Theatre as a silent movie house began in 1929, and was finished in 1932. The building withstood the fire of 1948, which burned the lower makai(ocean) side of Kainaliu. Movies changed from silent movies to talkies and the Aloha theatre became a gathering place for the mauka(mountain) community.

Since 2003 the Aloha has been the home of the Kona Association for the Performing Arts(KAPA). Concerts, plays and performing arts are presented. The Aloha's long legacy of showing films continues and includes arthouse films, independent films and film festivals such as the Hawaiian International Film Festival.

The Aloha Angel Cafe adjoins the theatre and offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. Both the theatre its cafe continue to be a gathering place for the community.

YOUR COMMENTS

Our apologies for the first e-mail message sent regarding the Jessie Collin Young event. The word "scam" was not an appropriate comment. The event was however, a disappointment and extremely over priced for what was presented. We heard many similar comments from people in rows all around us. We will probably not be going to events at Aloha Cafe in Kona in the future because we feel this was a misrepresentation and misuse of Jessie Collin Young's name to pull in money. We have seen high school music events with better quality than this was. We understand it was a benefit for a school..but nonetheless, it was over priced, boring and lacked professionalism.

Sorry for the poor review.

The Aloha Theatre is now the home of the Kona Association for the Performing Arts (KAPA). KAPA presents live plays, musicals, and concerts throughout the year. When the stage is not in use art films are shown. Under KAPA the building has had a significant facelift and looks great!

I am interested in the Aloha Theatre. When I click on the link to the web page it puts me into a search engine. Help.
What is the asking price, is it suitable for for live stage productions (i.e. is there a fly loft, wing space, orchestra pit) and are there any interior photos.

Interesting that the Aloha started out as a silent movie house, seeing that by 1932 talkies were going strong. Was there either a theater pipe organ or, say, a photoplayer used for the accompaniment of the films?

The Aloha Theatre was also known as the M. Tanimoto Theatre at one time. Tanimoto was from Honoka'a and the family had a theatre there under the name Tom Tanimoto Theatre. The Aloha was the only theatre in Knoa that had a stage.

Google maps doesn't like the address above so try this one:

79-7384 Mamalahoa Hwy
Kealakekua, HI 96750

The theater and cafe are for sale here. Asking price is $1,900,000.

Uh oh, with an asking price such as that you see what's going on there. It's going to become one of those cases where future passerby-ers will ask, "Hey, wasn't there a theater there?" and others with pockets stuffed with money will reply, "No, your memory is deluding you, there was never any theater here, that big [ugly] condominium complex you see is all that was ever there, that and nothing else" -- the whole "To be rich is glorious" thing, if you know what I'm getting at.
