When AMC opened the Marina 8 in 1981, they decimated the local competition by offering the first true multiplex experience in North Miami. In 1993 the Marina was re-invented as the Fashion Island 16. In 2002 it was closed after struggling against AMC's own Aventura 24 nearby.

Marina 8 marked a change from AMC's previous one-size-fits-all auditoriums (or "tube" style) at its South Florida theaters, with screens of varying widths and rooms of varying depths. Was a frequent visitor in its early Fashion Island days, when AMC made a strong commitment to art films (often in tandem with Cocowalk or Bakery Centre), the gradual releases of Kieslowki's "three colors" trilogy among the offerings.

Condos were slated to replace Fashion Island 16 (while retaining the surrounding mall).

The Marina 8 was one of the theaters I frequented most in my youth and they booked tons of the horror and exploitation films I craved during the 80's. Kind of an upscale grindhouse for suburban kids; only had to take one bus to get there and they seem to let anyone in for R and unrated films.

I worked there briefly one summer but quit because they kept bugging me for my proof of age (I was 13 but told them I was 16). During it's early years, the Marina 8 did great midnight showings on their AMC MIDNIGHT MOVIE EXPRESS ("Climb aboard for the ride of your life!"). Unfortunately, that gave way to midnight shows of first-run features.

I can still vividly remember what the whole place looked like due to the time I spent in and around it. Last thing I saw there was WILD AT HEART in 1990. Never went to it as the Fashion Island.
