Opened in 1920 as the Sunset Theatre, the theater received its current name, the Town, in 1946, when it was acquired by the Kerasotes chain.

At this time, the Town also was remodeled in Art Moderne style, including its yellow Vitrolite-faced exterior, and distinctive Streamline canopy marquee, which is ablaze with pink and golden neon lights at night.

In 1982, Kerasotes had the Town Theatre twinned, as it remains today.

The theater is now owned by Vern Reynolds, who has extensively and meticulously restored the Town to its 1940s glory in recent years.

The Town is one of several Art Deco and Art Moderne Illinois movie houses featured in the 2001 book "Popcorn Palaces" a collection of the paintings of Davis Cone.
