At one point in time Vermont Avenue had many theaters, but today they no longer line that street.

Maybe not demolished. The street numbers were a little mixed up on that block when I was there yesterday. I took some photos, so when they are posted we may be able to figure this out.

Here are the photos. Let me know what you think. As you can see, the numbers go from 4817 to 4819 at the end of the block, but there's a building in between:

A Moller theater organ opus 4290 size 2/8 was installed in the Astor Theater in 1925 at a cost of $5250.

The Astor Theatre building is still there. Though Ken's photos from June 29 do not show the address 4821 displayed on any of the buildings depicted, the city's zoning information system provides a report on the addresses 4819 through 4821-1/2. It looks as though the address 4819 has migrated over the years and is now in the building south of the original theatre building.

A combination of zoning information reports and a TerraServer satellite view of the block have convinced me that the white building in Ken's photo was the location of the Astor Theatre. The zoning information report reveals that this building was built in 1914. The Astor Theatre was listed at 4821 S. Vermont in the 1921 Los Angeles City Directory (the earliest available on the Internet.)

In the 1915 City Directory, an Apollo Theatre is listed at 4821 S. Vermont. As the building was erected in 1914, that must have been the opening name of the Astor.
