A wonderful set of 150 seat mini-cinemas run by Mid-States Theaters Inc. Located in the same building as the Playboy Club back when that meant class. Almost always provocative films. It opened July 30, 1969 with both screens playing “Midnight Cowboy”. Other films to play here include “Last Tango In Paris”, “Lenny” and more. “Billy Jack” had it’s world premiere there.

This great location is now a restaurant. And I don’t know how good it is, but it was a wonderful theatre. The lobby of the building it was located in would buzz with excitement on a Saturday night in the early-1970’s, with crowds lining up for the movie and people waiting for elevators to wisk them up to the Playboy Club. It was like Barbie Benton days.

Can you say “ROCKY HORROR?” This place rocked every Saturday nite as the official place to do the Time Warp again….

Actually, THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW played at another downtown theatre operated by Mid-States, the Skywalk on Vine St. I went there numerous times to see it. That theatre got demolished for what was the Fountain Square West project, and I believe a new Lazarus department store stands on that site.

Thanks MEHEUCK – Admittedly I was not in my best frame of mind at midnight showings – NOW I remember the Studio. In fact, saw the press screening of the partially finished MOMMIE DEAREST there (without half of the sounds effects). The wire hanger scene was especially odd with the sound out of sinc. Also, Linda Blair’s ROLLER BOOGIE was there – what a classic!
