Carroll Theater

This neighborhood theater in Crown Heights area of Brooklyn was opened in 1927 and was equipped with a Wurlitzer 2 manual, 10 rank organ. Unusual corner marquee, built on sloping street ascending to the entrance. This was a Fox house till early-1930’s. It was then operated by Randforce, and later Supreme. The Carroll Theater was closed in 1974.

It was served by Utica Avenue trolley. Competion to south was the Empress Theater on Empire Boulevard and the Lincoln Theater to North on Lincoln Place.

The LAST thing this poor theatre ran was 16mm porno and was operated by a guy named Archie Diskin. The organ had been ripped out, but, the white console was still sitting up front below the stage.

The last time I was there was to run a TV fight in 1970 between Muhammad Ali and Jerry Quarry. It ended so fast they lit the seats on fire and tried to throw them at the screen.

Wow! An 1863 seat porno theater. Sorry I missed it. (How does it look inside now with a church in occupancy?)

When I saw these pictures (especially “Lostmemory” THANKS) I felt my heart heave. My dad took us here from our house two blocks away when I was 6! Sigh!

I loved going to the Carroll in the mid 60’s. Spent many a wonderful afternoon there. Sometimes I even got to go to White Castle after the picture. Any one else recall that era?
