This eclectic independent theater was founded in 1980 by a group of cinema aficionados inside a red Victorian hotel (hence, its name) on Haight and Belvedere Streets. At that original site, it became known for using old couches as part of the seating, and for offering mostly homemade snack fare. However, conflicts with the owner forced them to eventually seek a new location.

The Red Vic moved to its current location in 1991, converting a former restaurant into a larger auditorium that now offered video, 16mm and 35mm dolby capability. Yet it still offers signature couches (newly-made, as the old ones had to be discarded), and organic homemade treats in its snack bar.

Still run by collective members and volunteers, the Red Vic is one of the foremost venues of independent and offbeat cinema in the San Francisco Bay Area.

This weekend the RedVic is screening "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" in 3-D and then next weekend "It Came from Outer Space", also in 3-D. I am planning on attending next weekend and will do my best to get some photos up here of the Red Vic and interior.

Sorry no photos from my trip. The exterior didn't change. But the inside is still great. For a Saturday afternoon, the theater itself was pretty full. I sat in the theatre seats in the middle to truly experience the 3-D.

Before the movie, the filmed messages that the Red Vic shows are nothing sort of awesome. If you attend, you can get your popcorn in a bowl. One of the filmed messages urges you to return your bowl to the counter and throw out your trash or get attacked by the seat monster. Several people joked about it as we were leaving after the movie. It was really a good time. I hope something is playing that Id like to see when I return in November.
