Opened as the Allen Theatre in 1920. It closed in 1959 and reopened in 1964 when it was renamed the Astor Theatre.

Closed and demolished in 1982, the site is now an empty lot.

the Astor was renamed in 1964 - NOT 1974, at which time it began showing the seedy-can't-show-too-much soporific adult films of the 60's.

I used to deliver papers for old Emily Szewed, who worked the ticket booth there in the 1960's, and she always embarassingly referred to it as "the old Allen theater".

Then in the mid-1970's it began showing the higher grade silver age XXX porn films and did fairly good business. In the late-1970's it became a strip joint (there was a stage). That didn't last long, and the demolition date of 1982 sounds about right.

The inside was actually quite plush.

Feedback on my remenisence is welcome.

The timeline somewhat corresponds with the theater on this postcard, but the Strand may be a different building. Not listed on CT:
