The 5 Star Cinemas are located in the Arbor Park shopping complex. It originally opened in 1991 with 3 screens and two more screens were added a year later in 1992.

When it first opened it was part of the Reel Entertainment. When the 5 Star first opened it wsa a mixed house showing first run features in the larger auditoriums and second run at bargain prices in the smaller three.

When Reel Entertainment went bankrupt the Star was closed for a short time and later reopened by Consolidated and then by Cinema Stars. In 2009 it is operated by Red Carpet Cinemas.

I really liked the guy who ran the Reel.He tried to have a real family-friendly place with great prices on the concessions. How sad that bad things happen to good people.

This theater should have an aka name of Reel Theater since that was the name that it opened as. The following article is from the Salt Lake Tribune dated April 10, 1992:

"The Reel Theater, located in the Arbor Park shopping complex in Magna, has five theaters ranging in size from 150 to 270 seats. The first three auditoriums opened in December 1992 and the final two on 10 April 1992.

Robert Denning, who owns the theater, chose Magna because "Salt Lake is overscreened on the east side. The farther away from the competition, the better off we'll be. Time will tell how wise it is. The Reel Theatre's nearest competition is the Valley Fair 9, 47 blocks east.

The Reel Theater is the first theater in Salt Lake Valley to show first-run motion pictures and discount-priced second-run movies', a mix designed to bring a wider range of moviegoers to the concession stand.

Mr. Denning was in the banking business until 1985, when he purchased a small theater in Draper. He later sold that theater and started a mini-chain of theaters stretching from Nampa, Idaho to Richfield, Utah. His philosophy has been to go places avoided by the major chains, mainly rural communities and small cities".

Per the January 2006 issue of "In Focus" magazine, this theater (along with Gateway Cinemas, Spanish Fork Movieplex and Showcase Cinemas) has been acquired by "A new theatrical circuit dubbed Red Carpet Cinemas."

Yesterday on July 8th 2006, me and my family (4 of us) went to check show times for Pirates and noted that the show we wanted to see started at 5pm. We went back the next day only to find out that they had changed the show times from 5 to 7 pm. The manager said that the new show times were posted the previous night, however when we were leaving there was a person out side changing the show times for pirates. She also said that changing show times happens a lot. The manager bold faced lied to us about both issues. We know for a fact since we have been patrons of 5 Star in Magna for many years that show times have not been changed at all. We do not appreciate this type of behavior and hope some one does something about it! We feel betrayed and disheartened! The manager bold faced lied to us and we are very upset and angry!!! Something should be done about this horrific treatment!
