Bijou Theatre

The Bijou Theatre was an early nickleodeon which, according to press adverts seen, was operating in 1910. It was located on S. Main Street which at that period of time was the main entertainment street in downtown Los Angeles.

A large parking structure currently stands on the site of the theatre.

I keep coming up with bakeries at this address. Bond bakery in 1904 and Van de Kamps in 1927. Perhaps the theater was just part of the building at that location.

This theatre’s building was probably demolished to make way for the later building that housed the Art Theatre (opened 1918) at 551 S. Main. I believe that one of the storefronts in the Art’s building had the address 553 S. Main.

This is an elusive theater. It doesn’t show up in the LA Times archives. Perhaps they didn’t advertise.
