This was the one of three state-of-the-art multiplexes (along with the Chatham 14 and 62nd & Western 10) built by Inner City Entertainment in 1997 through a partnership with Cineplex Odeon, who would operate them.
They were viewed as a significant effort to bring movies back to the city’s African-American community, and to help revitalize the south side. Following Loews-Cineplex’s reorganization, Marcus took over management in 2002.
In early June 2007, ICE closed both this theater as well as the 62nd & Western Cinema. The ICE Lawndale 10 was re-opened in summer of 2011.

http://www.jlarch.net/projects/the_lawndale.html . I suppose it might have also been a 5-year contract with Marcus, too.
I don’t really know very much about the subject. But I have heard the Lawndale area is coming up a little bit. There could be a future for this site if my statement holds water.
The status of this place should be “closed.” I believe that the Quarry aka Hodgkins Cinema also looks like this place.
I remember all the hoopla when this place opened in 1997 or so. The partners in Inner City Entertainment made all this hoopty-doo about how they were bringing movies back to the inner-city areas.
What went wrong?
I remember that as well. I thought it was a good idea at the time, because people everywhere like the movies. But apparently it didn’t work in practice.
I suppose it could have also been mismanagement, as these are the same people who ran Meridian. My understanding is that Meridian went under because they owed a large amusement tax balance that could not be paid.
LTS
Yes, Meridian went under because they failed to pay city and county amusement taxes.
I’d guess the government largess ended or they fulfilled all the attached terms and obligations.
Lawndale may have bottomed out but there’s no where near the disposable income to sustain a multiplex yet.
There has been enough development on the Near West Side to sustain a 6-10 screen house. Sundance Cinema was looking at a multiplex on Racine couple of years ago.

Per ICE’s website, this theatre has re-opened! http://icetheaters.com/lawndale10.asp
I agree with what Paul above says. The Lawndale has reopened and its status should be changed to “open”.
