The Gaiety Theater is listed as the first motion picture theater in Hilo. It opened in 1909 with 600 seats. In 1916 the Gaiety Theater was remodeled which increased seating to 1000. The Gaiety was a silent-era theater that showed its last movie on October 25, 1925. The building was used as a dance hall for a brief period of time before being demolished.
