The film “Flying Blind” billed on the marquee on the photo of the Tate Theatre dates it 1941. Strangely, Film Daily Yearbooks;1941 and 1943 editions that I have, only mention a 200 seat Rialto Theatre in Boaz, AL.
The 1950 edition of F.D.Y. lists a New Tate Theatre, but no seating capacity and the Rialto Theatre, Main Street with 500 seats.
The following info comes from hsvmovies.com:
“Tate Theatre
Opening date: 1948/10/14
First movie shown: Honeymoon
The Tate Theatre opened on Thursday, October 14, 1948 at 5:00 PM and was located at 101 North Church Street (at West Mill Avenue) in Boaz. ????Honeymoon???? starring Shirley Temple, Guy Madison, and Franschot Tone was the first movie shown. The building was later used by Weather’s Furniture. The theatre operated until 1950. It was run by Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Tate".
Since it opened in 1948, that explains why there is no listing in the earlier FDYbooks. Why they were showing a 1941 movie in a theater that opened in 1948 is a mystery. I haven’t found any mention of a New Tate Theater. As far as the address given, Google maps it at 101 Church St and not North Church St. Maybe it’s a typo or the street was renamed.
