River oaks theaters 1-6

The River Oaks 1-6 opened December 16, 1988 for the Cineplex Odeon chain. Shortly after, the old River Oaks 2 & 3 closed, the original theatre building changed from the 1 & 4 to the 9 & 10, the 5 & 6 became the 11 & 12, and the 7 & 8 retained their numbering. Originally the plans were for a three-screen in 1986, then an eight-screen, before settling on the six. It was built in a former Kmart store.

This theater was supposed to have closed as part of the 2001 bankruptcy, but this didn’t happen. Instead, it was closed at the end of January, 2006 as part of the merger between Loews and AMC.

The theater reopened in June 2006, operated independently by the owners of the Lansing Cinema 8 in Lansing, IL, (formerly the River Run Theater). The River Oaks closed once more during the summer of 2008 and was demolished in October 2012.

I hope someone comes in and takes lots of interior photos of 1-6, and especially 7-8 before they come down.

With Carson’s closing in January, and two (so far) of the old theaters coming down, it appears that big things are abound for River Oaks.

Hey I was in 7-8 back in 2009, I’m shocked to hear they may knock em down. When I did my 2 walk thrus the building they were still in real good condition. I made 2 offers to management to use both screen 2-3 times a month, but they passed telling me they had a dance school that wanted it for practice and plays. Shame to see it go.

This theatre is now gone. They tore it down last month. What for? Who Knows.

The odd thing was that when I visited the mall in June 2013, the marquee was still up. The mall entrance just to the left of this theater is now locked up post 1-6 theater demolition, as well. You oddly can still walk right up to where this theater was, or at least could as of June of that year. Not sure what it’s like now, since I hadn’t revisited in almost 11/2 years.
